Electric Power Generation

About This Job

With more than 1,000 members—including over 700 utilities serving the majority of American households—the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) helps utilities, technology providers, and policymakers identify and share practical solutions to some of the most consequential energy challenges of our time. SEPA’s impact depends on engagement and influence; as Director of Marketing, Strategy & Engagement, you will ensure SEPA’s growing portfolio of in-person and virtual events, online education, research deliverables, publications, working groups, and peer engagements effectively reaches the right stakeholders to drive progress toward a clean, resilient, and affordable energy future.

Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer and leading three direct reports, you will oversee the planning, implementation, and performance of marketing efforts across digital platforms, campaigns, and member engagement initiatives. This includes audience development, analytics-driven decision-making, and collaboration across Programs and Events, Membership, and Research and Industry Strategy teams. You will elevate the sophistication of SEPA’s marketing approach through integrated, multi-channel campaigns that drive increased event registrations, membership acquisition and renewals, publication and research visibility, and engagement with revenue-generating products. You will also evaluate and leverage AI-powered capabilities in our marketing tech stack and support the continuous improvement of SEPA’s overall digital strategy as AI changes how audiences engage online.

This role plays a central part in aligning SEPA’s brand presence with its strategic pillars—Grid, Growth, and Globe—by elevating our value proposition to members, partners, and the broader energy ecosystem. Collaborating closely with the Senior Director, External Communications, you will help strengthen SEPA’s brand and positioning through messaging and engagement strategies that reinforce our role as a trusted convener and thought leader, while driving action among utilities, technology companies, and policymakers.

How You’ll Make an Impact

Your work will amplify SEPA’s impact, support revenue diversification, and enhance member engagement as we work to accelerate the electric power industry’s transformation to a modern energy future. Within your first 1–2 years, you will:

- Build a high-performing, strategically aligned marketing function, shifting marketing from reactive execution to proactive, data-driven partnership with teams across the organization.

- Develop and execute a cross-platform, cohesive marketing strategy that gains momentum through stronger audience segmentation, clearly defined member and stakeholder journeys, and coordinated, outcome-oriented campaigns that reflect a consistent brand voice tailored to the target audience.

- Increase SEPA’s visibility among senior executives across utilities, technology companies, and peer organizations, indicated by leaders referencing SEPA content and leadership, seeking collaboration, and engaging SEPA in high-impact conversations, signaling a greater share of voice and demand for SEPA’s partnership.

Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits

- This role offers a remote working environment with the option of a Washington, DC, co-working space. Travel is required 6-8 times per year for SEPA events/meetings and meetings with external stakeholders.

- The budgeted salary range for this position is $140K-$160K. We offer an outstanding benefits package, including fully paid health, dental, vision, and HRA; Flexible Spending Account; fully paid short & long-term disability; life insurance; 24 days of PTO; travel assistance; 401(k) with 4% employer match; telecommuting reimbursement; professional development reimbursement; employee assistance program; health and wellness reimbursement; and pet insurance discounts.

- At SEPA, culture isn’t something we declare—it’s something we live. We are building a Culture for Everyone: a workplace where people from all backgrounds can thrive, grow, and contribute to a mission that matters. SEPA prioritizes diversity within its workforce and across the energy industry. We recognize that a diverse and inclusive workforce drives innovation, creativity, and better decision-making.

Responsibilities

Strategic Marketing Expertise

- Design and implement marketing strategies that reflect SEPA’s strategic priorities and messaging. Translate SEPA’s research, events, and working group content into clear, high-impact marketing campaigns to drive member engagement, program enrollment, and policy influence.

- Support SEPA’s thought leadership positioning by elevating visibility of member achievements, expert insights, and staff contributions through targeted storytelling and campaigns.

- Monitor and improve performance through ongoing KPI tracking, audience segmentation, and conversion analysis.

- Lead the development of monthly or quarterly performance reports, synthesizing data across channels to evaluate impact and guide strategy.

- Leverage AI tools and technologies to enhance marketing performance, optimize workflows, and explore innovative campaign strategies.

- Prepare and manage the marketing budget, ensuring maximum ROI on marketing investments.

Campaign & Content Strategy

- Lead the strategy and execution of multi-channel marketing plans that support key organizational objectives, including event and webinar registration, membership renewals and new member acquisition, publication and research visibility, and non-dues revenue products (e.g., sponsorships, learning platforms, in-house content).

- Supervise editorial calendars, ensuring alignment of visual, written, and narrative components.

- Serve as a steward of SEPA’s voice and member journey, ensuring consistency across email, social media, the website, publications, and events.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

- Collaborate with all internal SEPA teams to align marketing strategies with organizational goals.

- Supervise and mentor members of the Marketing team, set strategic goals, managing timelines, and facilitating ongoing professional development.

- Collaborate with the Communications and Marketing team to maintain brand consistency and performance-driven storytelling.

- Partner with the Information Management team to ensure marketing technology integrations (e.g., Salesforce, Pardot, analytics dashboards) support organizational needs and insights.

- Work closely with the Programs and Events, Membership, and Research and Industry Strategy teams to develop tailored campaigns that deliver value to members and partners.

Innovation & Optimization

- Champion continuous improvement and innovation in SEPA’s marketing strategies, including testing new approaches to lead generation, automated engagement, and analytics.

- Manage vendor relationships for creative, advertising, and analytics support.

- Evaluate and recommend tools and platforms to increase marketing efficiency, performance visibility, and audience targeting.

- Monitor, test, and adopt emerging tools—including AI-powered platforms—to drive innovation in digital strategy and execution.

Qualifications

- 10+ years of experience in marketing strategy or digital marketing, preferably within a nonprofit, association, or mission-driven organization, including at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.

- Proven success leading integrated, data-informed campaigns tied to member engagement or program growth.

- Familiarity with Pardot, Salesforce, Google Analytics, Feathr, SEMrush, and modern marketing technology stacks.

- Strong understanding of AI tools and their application to modern marketing workflows, content creation, and audience engagement.

- Experience leading remote or distributed teams, with a focus on coaching, innovation, and collaboration.

- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to execute both independently and collaboratively.

- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to simplify complex content for diverse audiences.

- An understanding of, or strong interest in, clean energy, grid innovation, or utility sector trends is a plus.
