Job Description
The primary role of Miner is to inspect existing underground headings, scale loose rocks, install ground support to stabilize rock mass, drill, blast, operate mining machinery, construct tunnels, passageways and shafts to facilitate mining operations safely. The tasks may involve the operation of scaling bars, pneumatic hand-held drills, use of rubber-tired underground mobile equipment such as LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) units, mechanized bolters, scissor trucks, shotcrete sprayers and other support vehicles in a confined environment.
Responsibilities
- To conduct pre-start and post-operation inspections of the assigned equipment.
- To operate one (1) or more of the following equipment in accordance with established Standard Work Procedures (SWP):
- Spraymec
- Scoop
- bolter
- Truck
- Scissor Lift
- Jammer
- IT Loader
- JCB Telehandler
- JCB Basket Telehandler
- Forklift
- Transmixer
- Motor Grader
- Jumbo drill
- Additional equipment may be added to the above list at Mining Management discretion.
- Identify unsafe conditions in underground headings - high level of alertness required.
- Scale back and walls as required to make the workplace safe.
- Drill holes using hand-held pneumatic drills or drill-boom mounted on bolter.
- Insert rock bolt following approved method of installation.
- Install other ground support components as required such as welded wire mesh and shotcrete.
- Install or fix existing mines services such as vent tubing and pipes using various lifting equipment such as scissor trucks, chain blocks and hand tools.
- Load explosives, set fuses, and detonate explosives to produce desired blasting patterns and rock fragmentation in underground mines
- Operate scooptram, load-haul-dump (LHD) machine or mucking machine to load and haul ore from stopes, drifts and drawpoints to ore passes.
- Perform duties required to ensure safety and to support the mining advance, such as scaling loose rock from walls and roof, drilling and installing rock bolts, extending and installing air and water pipes, operating ore loading machinery, inspecting mine shafts, operating hoists that transport people, equipment and materials through mine shafts, and constructing timber supports and cribbing if required.
- Perform routine maintenance of mining machinery.
- Operates multiple pieces of powered and non-powered mining equipment such as rock drills, muckers, forklifts, bolters, loaders, haulers, scalers etc. to complete daily tasks
- Drill, blast, operate mining machinery, and perform related duties to extract ore in underground mines and to construct tunnels, passageways and shafts to facilitate mining operations

- Assess all excavations and install ground support in development or reconditioned areas as per plan and section as the development progresses.
- Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform his duties in a safe and efficient manner
- Able to operate Single and Two Boom Jumbo.
- Able to operate 6yd and 9yd Loaders.
- Able to understand different rock types and drilling/blasting procedures to minimize over-break.
- Able to operate mechanized bolter.
- Able to operate shotcrete equipment.
- Able to handle explosives and load rounds in a safe and productive manner.
- Able to install utilities such as ventilation and air/water pipe.
- Understand confined space, fall protection, equipment isolation, and standards and procedures.
- Responsible to keep work areas safe and free of hazards. Performs Field Level Risk Assessments.
- Must be able to follow proper procedures to ensure safety and to control equipment damage.
- Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform his duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Comply with daily, weekly and monthly safety directives, policies, and procedures.
- If required to operate a company vehicle during the course of employment, must meet the requirements to be an eligible user of company vehicles. Must possess a current State Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
- Maintain confidentiality with respect to Redpath and client information.
- Complies with and ensure compliance with Redpath’s Policies and Procedures as detailed in the appropriate manuals, handbooks, directives, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Able to work in excess of 40 hours a week, overtime, day and nights, weekends, holidays and shift rotations.
- Compliance with Redpath Core Competencies is an essential duty and responsibility.

- May operate equipment such as: forklifts, cranes, and small mobile equipment.
- Underground miners typically need a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
- Post-secondary education, two-year associate degree in mining technology or a similar field encouraged.
- 2-3 years’ experience in underground mining operations.
- Experience working with mining associated mobile heavy equipment, tools, etc.
- Must be able to demonstrate proper use and safe handling of tools, equipment and materials.
- Knowledge of the mining industry underground environment
- Ability to read and understand engineering prints (civil work, structural work, rock excavation work).
- Knowledge and understanding of mine regulations pertaining to construction in mining.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, both verbal and written.
- High level of attention to detail, neatness and accuracy
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to pass background clearance check, drug screening and physical.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
