Performs general and emergency repairs to nuclear plant mechanical equipment. Such equipment includes control rod drives, reactor recirculating pumps, steam turbines, governors, pumps, water intake equipment, cranes, and other plant equipment; dismantling and assembling equipment, the removal of parts, and repair of tools. Performs maintenance jobs in accordance with written instructions and quality assurance requirements. Operates shop equipment such as lathes, shapers, milling machines, surface grinders, radial drills, floor drills, and general shop machinery. May be required to use oxygenacetylene torches for both heating and cutting. The repairs to machinery and equipment may be radioactive or located in a radiation zone.
A minor portion of time will be spent in connection with infrequent construction work making up necessary job reports, and periodic checking of general operating conditions of mechanical equipment.
Must be a journeyman machinist with at least a high school education or equivalent, and four or more years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment. The position requires a thorough knowledge of precision machine shop work and the mechanical characteristics of equipment installed in the plant which includes alignment of and repairs to turbines and turbine equipment, pumps, hydraulic couplings, compressors, blowers, hoists, governors, cranes, and related equipment. Another prerequisite is the capacity to apply this knowledge to the correct procedure to be followed in all emergencies as well as during routine attention.
Under the direct supervision of a foreman, who assigns and checks work during progress as well as completed work for proper performance, and under the general supervision of a general foreman and the craft section supervisor.
May supervise the work and training of one or more helpers or apprentices.
