Key responsibilities include calculating material, labor, and equipment costs, working with vendors to get quotes, preparing bid proposals, communicating with engineers, and project managers to ensure projects stay on budget and schedule.
Cost estimation: Prepare detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, and equipment for mechanical projects.
Plan analysis: Review project plans, specifications, and drawings to understand the project's scope and material requirements
Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate estimates and budget adherence.
Vendor and subcontractor management: Solicit bids and quotes from vendors and subcontractors and negotiate prices.
Bid preparation: Prepare and submit comprehensive bid proposals for projects. Ensure timely proposal submission and manage post-bid clarifications. Investigate cost saving alternatives.
Site visits: Conduct pre & post bid site visits as required.
Risk assessment: Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies for projects.
Budget tracking: Monitor and report on project budgets and expenditures.
Database management: Develop and maintain databases of historical cost data for future estimates.
Preparing changes to costs estimates when customers change their plans, or when the availability of materials or labour changes.
Estimating experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience with general contracting industrial projects, material handling fabrication or related industries considered an asset.
Engineering Knowledge: Broad understanding of various engineering disciplines.
Software Proficiency: Intermediate proficiency in software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Interpretation Skills: Ability to interpret detailed information from engineering firms, subcontractors, and vendors for multi-disciplinary scopes.
CWB Codes Knowledge: Familiarity with CWB Codes for Structure fabrication
Compliance Awareness: Understanding of Quality and Safety compliance costs.
Work Ethic: Strong work ethic and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Trade ticket or post-secondary education considered an asset
Strong understanding of mechanical systems, metal fabrication (Machining / Welding)
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and best practices.
Attention to detail and ability to work with large amounts of data.
Develop and improve procedures, databases, cost models, templates, and tools for cost estimation.
Hours: 40 hours per week with possibility of project-based overtime
