The Shop Mechanic is a safety-sensitive role responsible for the high-level maintenance, diagnostic troubleshooting, and repair of a diverse fleet of heavy construction equipment and on-highway trucks. This position ensures that the Asphalt and Paving division operates at peak efficiency by minimizing equipment downtime through rigorous preventive maintenance and rapid response corrective repairs. The ideal candidate is a skilled technician who balances technical expertise with a 'Safety First' mindset, ensuring all equipment meets manufacturer specifications and OSHA safety standards.
- Utilize advanced computer diagnostic software and precision measuring tools to identify malfunctions in engines (diesel and gasoline), transmissions, and electronic control systems.
- Perform complex repairs and overhauls on hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, electrical circuits, and power train components.
- Service and repair specialized asphalt machinery including pavers, rollers (smooth drum and pneumatic), material transfer vehicles (shuttles), and loaders.
- Dismantle and reassemble equipment to replace worn or damaged parts such as bearings, gearboxes, conveyor belts, and hydraulic cylinders.
- Execute scheduled PM services including oil and filter changes, lubrication, and comprehensive system inspections to prevent mechanical failure.
- Conduct mandatory OSHA and DOT pre-shift safety inspections of work areas and equipment.
- Conduct pre-and post-shift safety inspections of shop equipment and field vehicles to ensure compliance with company and federal regulations.
- Maintain accurate service records, including work orders, parts inventory usage, and equipment history logs.
- Completes all paperwork as necessary, including but not limited to work orders, parts request, timecards, logs, pre/post-trip inspections etc.
- Perform welding, cutting, and minor fabrication to repair equipment frames, buckets, and asphalt plant components.
- Maintain and repair air brake systems on heavy-duty trucks and trailers, ensuring all on-highway vehicles are DOT-compliant.
- Operate service trucks and specialized shop tools (hoists, jacks, impact wrenches, and torches) safely and effectively.
- Strictly adhere to all Martin Marietta safety policies, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean and organized shop environment to mitigate workplace hazards.
- Participate in the hazard recognition program by reporting near-misses and contributing to weekly safety meetings.High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience; Trade school certification in Diesel Mechanics or Heavy Equipment Technology preferred.
3–5+ years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance, specifically with brands such as CAT, Komatsu, Volvo, or John Deere.
Heavy equipment operations (engines, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical pneumatic)
Must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
Ascending and descending ladders, stairs, and large machinery (e.g., pavers, rollers, and haul trucks).
Able to work from elevated platforms and confined spaces.
Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and balancing to access engine compartments or undercarriages.
High level of hand-eye coordination for using precision hand tools, air tools, and diagnostic laptops.
Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty.andnbsp;Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.
Must supply own working set of mechanical tools (check with local shop for specific details).
