Note: this position requires shift rotation between the day and afternoon shift. Night shift may be required in the future.
To plan and perform or direct the making and repair of tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, templates, dies, machine parts and Instrument parts. Perform any dismantling, fitting, fabrication and assembly work required for plant equipment and machinery.
Special notes re: certifications, tickets, etc.: Ticketed, Red Seal Tool & Die Maker certification required.
- Receives instructions, prints, and work orders.
- Interprets drawings and sketches, plans and determines working procedure for tools and material requirements.
- Designs simple tools, jigs, and fixtures.
- Makes sketches of parts and performs any layout as required.
- Calculates and determines dimensions, tapers, indices, and other data using shop formula and handbooks as necessary. Selects and grinds tools for the job in accordance with hardness, machine ability, desired finish and other properties of parts to be machined.
- Sets up and operates any type of machine tool common to the trade, adjusting stops, feeds, speeds, and indexing, tapering, or threading attachments to perform any type of operation for which the machine is adapted.
- Machines and hand finishes parts to precision tolerance and required surface.
- Uses precision measuring instruments.
- Assembles, fits, aligns, and adjusts parts to very close tolerances.
- Applies ordinary heat treatment to ferrous materials of any shape, requiring a general knowledge of physical properties of materials, critical temperatures, various techniques of heat treating, drawing, tempering, annealing, and the application of various quenching mediums.
- Performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of machine shop and tool room practices and techniques, properties of various materials, the principles of application and operation of various types of tools, fixtures, dies, instruments, and machinery, and the ability to plan and execute difficult work to precision tolerances.
- Selects materials in accordance with suitability for job.
- Cleans and prepares surfaces to be welded as required. Builds up worn or defective surfaces.
- Cleans, grinds and flame anneals parts and welded joints as required.
- Performs brazing as required.
- Exercises all safety precautions and makes provisions for handling materials and equipment to and from job site as required in connection with work.
- Performs work requiring a working knowledge of the welding properties of various types of metals, welding rods, welding heats, stress relief, allowances for fit up an and machining.
- Completes necessary time cards.
- Keeps work area clean and orderly. Calculates and determines materials & dimensions required to ensure proper fit & function of equipment where information is not available.
- Dismantles equipment as required either in shop or dept.
- Assembles, fits, aligns and adjusts equipment components to very close tolerances to ensure proper efficient operation.
- Determines if Heat treatment properties can be achieved using in house equipment or requires sub-con, if sub-con is required they will specify requirements to subcontractor.
- Any of all duties as assigned & directed
