The Business Development Manager is responsible for originating, developing, and closing commercial and small utility-scale solar opportunities (typically 100 kW – 10 MW) across the Northeast. This role sits at the front end of the revenue pipeline and is accountable for generating qualified opportunities that convert into executed EPC or turnkey development contracts.
This is not a passive relationship role-you are expected to actively create deal flow, navigate complex stakeholders, and push projects to close.
- Identify and pursue new solar opportunities with:
- Commercial & industrial (C&I) energy users
- Municipalities, schools, and non-profits
- Developers, real estate owners, and landowners
- Build and maintain a pipeline of qualified projects (target: multi-MW annual volume)
- Develop partnerships with:
- Property owners
- EPC partners
- Financing partners
- Referral networks (brokers, engineers, attorneys)
- Lead the full sales cycle
- Collaborate with the internal design, estimating, and development teams.
- Prepare and present proformas and proposals
- Negotiate commercial terms with decision-makers
- Support project financing
- Present EPC, RFP’s and professional services contracts
- Understand and leverage:
- Net metering programs and permitting processes
- Solar programs and requirements throughout the Northeast
- Federal solar tax incentives
- Utility interconnection requirements
- Track policy changes and identify opportunities created by regulatory shifts
- Position projects to maximize incentives and long-term value
- Assist in early-stage development activities:
- Site identification and qualification
- High-level financial modeling
- Off-taker acquisition
- Coordinate with internal teams on:
- Interconnection strategy
- Permitting pathway
- EPC pricing
- Build long-term relationships with key accounts and repeat customers
- Serve as primary point of contact through development and contract execution
- Maintain a strong reputation for reliability, and clear and consistent communication
- Move projects from development stage to executed contracts in a timely manner
- Track and manage clients and partners in a organized, consistent, and efficient way utilizing the company CRM
- Manage Clients and partners through the sales process
- Hand off Clients to operations team and provide support as needed
- Strong commercial instincts—you understand what makes a deal work
- Persistent and proactive—you create opportunities rather than wait for them
- Clear communicator with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Financially literate (can speak to IRR, savings, pricing drivers)
- Organized and process-driven (pipeline management is critical)- 3+ years of experience in solar, energy, or infrastructure development/sales
- Proven ability to originate and close commercial Solar deals
- Strong understanding of:
- Commercial solar economics
- Basic project finance concepts
- Ability to manage multiple deals simultaneously
- Associate or bachelor’s degree, or equivalent
- Ideally 2-3 years or more of C&I or utility scale solar BD experience
- Experience in Vermont or Northeast solar markets
- Familiarity with:
- Net metering structures
- Interconnection processes
- permitting
- Solar O&M
- BESS systems
- Existing network of commercial clients, developers, or brokers
