Situated 10 kilometers west of picturesque Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.
Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. Position Overview: We have 24 exciting summer student positions in a variety of departments. These positions include:
- Mill Operations Laborer Summer Students - 7 days on, 7 days off, 7 nights on, 7 days off, 12-hour shifts
Working as a member of a high performing crew and getting an introduction to an industrial process. Learn about how we turn rocks into money by separating valuable minerals from our ore.
- Tailings Summer Student - 7 days on, 7 days off, 7 nights on, 7 days off, 12-hour shifts
They will enjoy a summer working with a great group while contributing to the success of one of our highest site priorities.
- Tailings Technical - Monday to Friday
Great for the student looking to explore the work of civil engineering or survey, this role will support our surface technical team.
Assisting with sample collection and prep, supporting and learning from the Metallurgical team. Learn about how we turn rocks into money by separating valuable minerals from our ore.
- Mine Operations Laborer Summer Students - 7 days on, 7 days off, 7 nights on, 7 days off, 11-hour shifts
Be trained in specialty equipment maintenance & repairs, train on and operate auxiliary equipment to support operations and assist in the repair of Construction & Development teams’ tools, including air operated pumps, hydraulic cable tensioners, and other specialty mining tools.
- Supply Chain and Warehousing Summer Students - Monday to Friday
Join the New Afton Supply Chain team as a Warehouse Summer Student, where you'll assist with inventory management, materials receiving and order fulfillment, and maintaining a clean, organized, and safe workspace. This role offers hands-on experience in an industrial warehouse environment, perfect for students looking to gain valuable skills and work experience
- Electrical and Instrumentation Summer Student - 7 days on, 7 days off, 11-hour shifts
The Electrical & Instrumentation Team is an industrial electrical trade group responsible to maintain all electrical infrastructure onsite from the high voltage feed from BC Hydro to the filters on the electrical rooms and battery electric vehicles. Tasks would include working with our electrical engineer during the week with KPI tracking, updating PM documents, DC inventory management, and internal project support for the department, and on the weekends as a trade's helper, learning first-hand what tradespeople do here at New Afton.
- Fixed Plant Maintenance Summer Student - Monday to Friday, days only
As part of the Maintenance Team you will be fully integrated into the maintenance crew on either the Fixed Asset Team or the Electrical & Instrumentation Team. The Fixed Asset Team is a mechanical trade group responsible to maintain the mill and crushing & conveying assets. If you are interested in being hands on and seeing how equipment is properly maintained, this is the opportunity for you. You would provide support as a trade's helper, learning first-hand what tradespeople do here at New Afton.
- Finance Summer Student - Monday to Friday
Join the New Afton Finance team as a Finance Summer Student, where you'll support the cost accountants assisting with our fixed asset project.
- Health and Safety Summer Student - Monday to Friday
The Health and Safety summer student role will involve data entry, learning the H&S Management System and supporting the Health and Safety training team. There is opportunity to get some field experience during the time in the H&S role.
- Indigenous and Environment Summer Student - Monday to Friday
A great opportunity learn about engagement with our partners, the Stk'emlupsemc Te Secwepemc Nation and New Afton’s Indigenous commitments, tracking of key environmental information and environmental monitoring programs.
Monday to Friday schedules may be available as 5 days on, 2 days off, 8-hour shifts, or 4 days on, 3 days off, 10-hour shifts depending on the role.
7 on, 7 off schedules run Wednesday to Tuesday
We will do our best to match the position to the student’s area of study or interest.
Students will be responsible for a variety of tasks based on which department they are placed with. These positions can provide qualified candidates with the opportunity to apply their education and gain exposure to our mining operation. We are seeking candidates with a strong work ethic, who work safely and who demonstrate a desire to learn.
- Students must have previously completed grade 12.
- Applicants must currently be considered "full-time" students and returning to full time studies in September 2026 (if applicable to program). The definition of a full-time student is one who successfully completes three (3) full credit courses per semester at an accredited university, college, or technical school. Co-op terms and practicums are considered credited courses.
- Students must be returning to school for the fall term of the current year.
- Students must be able to work shift work.
- Employment applications along with a transcript (official or unofficial) or proof of enrollment must be submitted.
- Students must be at least 18 years old.
- School and/or work experience related to supply chain management, business administration, mechanical, process and operational tasks would be considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to work independently.
- Students must hold a valid Driver’s License and have access to personal transportation.
- Students must be available for the full 4-month term, May – August 2026.
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
- Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
- Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
- Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
The anticipated compensation for these positions is between $22.00/hr and $24.00/hr. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
