Steel Fabricator Quality Control Inspector/Manager (Night SHift)

Summary

The Structural Steel Quality Control Inspector is responsible for ensuring all fabricated and erected steel meets company standards, project specifications, AISC requirements, and applicable codes. This role performs inspections in the shop and/or field, documents findings, verifies compliance with welding and fabrication standards, and works closely with fabricators, welders, project managers, and supervisors to maintain the highest level of quality throughout all phases of production.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Assurance & Inspection

- Perform visual inspections of structural steel, welds, bolted connections, and fabricated components in the shop and the field.

- Verify compliance with project drawings, specifications, industry codes (AWS D1.1, AISC), and company quality procedures.

- Inspect incoming materials to confirm mill certifications, heat numbers, and material conformity.

- Measure dimensions and tolerances using tools such as calipers, micrometers, squares, and gauges.

- Monitor welding processes for proper procedures, filler metals, preheat, and general workmanship.

- Ensure bolted connections meet torque, tension, and installation requirements per RCSC standards.

Documentation & Reporting

- Complete inspection forms, NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports), weld maps, and daily quality reports.

- Maintain accurate and organized inspection records for internal QA and customer review.

- Document and photograph deficiencies and track corrective actions through completion.

- Assist with preparing quality documentation for project close-out packages.

Coordination & Communication

- Collaborate with shop supervisors, project managers, and field superintendents to correct deficiencies.

- Communicate quality issues clearly to production teams and ensure timely resolution.

- Participate in pre-fabrication meetings, project kickoffs, and safety briefings as needed.

- Provide feedback and input to improve quality procedures and workflows.

Compliance & Safety

- Ensure all work meets OSHA and company safety standards.

- Verify that welding personnel maintain required certifications and follow approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications).

- Support internal and external audits as required.

Minimum Qualifications

- High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school background preferred.

- 2–5 years of experience in structural steel fabrication, welding, inspection, or quality control.

- Strong knowledge of AWS D1.1, AISC, and standard structural steel terminology.

- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, shop drawings, and erection drawings.

- Proficient with measuring tools and inspection instruments.

- Strong documentation and organizational skills.

- Ability to work in a shop and field environment (climbing, lifting, outdoor conditions).
