Senior Geologist/Geomodeling

SM Energy is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Geologist to lead geomodeling efforts across the organization. You will be part of the Corporate Reservoir Characterization team, located in Denver or Houston. You will build and steward high-quality geomodels in Petrel, integrating stratigraphy, structural interpretation, petrophysics, geophysics, geomechanics, and engineering inputs. The role includes cross-team collaboration and mentoring.

Responsibilities

- Build and maintain Petrel geomodels with robust stratigraphic and structural frameworks.

- Integrate geology with geophysics, geomechanics, and engineering analyses.

- Support petrophysical interpretation using logs, cores, and production ties.

- Participate in development planning, prospect generation, and drill planning.

- Manage data in Petrel, Spotfire, and related applications.

- Mentor junior geoscientists and share new technologies.

- Uphold SM Energy values and safety standards.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in subsurface geology, with advanced knowledge of stratigraphy, structural geology, petrophysics, and depositional systems relevant to unconventional reservoirs. They must demonstrate expert level proficiency in Petrel geomodeling, including building structural frameworks, property modeling, and integrating multidisciplinary datasets (logs, cores, seismic, engineering inputs). Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities are essential, along with the capacity to interpret complex datasets and translate technical insights into clear recommendations for asset development and business decisions. This role requires excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across geoscience, engineering, and operations teams. A strong sense of leadership, integrity, and mentorship is also expected, with the ability to guide junior staff and contribute to a positive, high-performance technical culture.

Experience/Education

- MS in Geology or Geophysics.

- 8+ years of experience in geology.

- Expert Petrel geomodeling skills.

- Strong mapping, structural geology, and reservoir understanding.

- Proficiency with Petrel, Spotfire, ArcGIS, seismic software, and Microsoft Office.

- Strong cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.

- Geology and geologic modeling experience in the Permian, Uinta, South Texas and DJ Bains preferred.
