Project Engineer – Solar, BESS, EV Charging
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer / Energy Systems Designer to support the development and execution of solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and EV charging projects. This role is responsible for managing the engineering attributes of projects across multiple concurrent projects in various U.S. markets.
This role focuses on system design, engineering coordination, and technical support throughout the project lifecycle. A licensed PE is not required for this role but is welcomed. Strong technical expertise and real-world project experience are required.
- Develop and support system designs for:
- Solar PV systems
- Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
- EV charging infrastructure
- Design and integrate PV monitoring, energy monitoring, and SCADA systems
- Utilize modeling tools including PVsyst, Helioscope, and Energy Toolbase
- Optimize system designs for financial performance (ROI, IRR, NPV)
- Manage and coordinate external engineering resources
- Lead or support utility interconnection applications and processes
- Develop and review interconnection designs including switching schemes, relays, and protection systems
- Review engineering drawings, plan sets, and equipment selections
- Create permitting packages
- Support project development and preconstruction efforts
- Provide technical support to project management and construction teams
- Ensure designs comply with NEC, utility, and AHJ requirements
- Assist with troubleshooting and design optimization during construction- 5–10+ years of experience designing PV, BESS, and EV charging systems
- Experience with PV monitoring, energy monitoring, and SCADA systems
- Strong understanding of interconnection equipment including switching schemes and relays
- Experience with Modbus and RS-485 communication protocols
- Proven experience optimizing systems for financial performance (ROI, IRR, NPV, Etc.)
- Working knowledge of ITC, MACRS, and other incentives
- Proficiency with PVsyst, Helioscope, and Energy Toolbase
- Experience managing third-party engineering firms
- Experience working on multi-state projects
- Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings
- Minimum 4-year engineering degree required
- Ability to pass a background check and qualify for entrance onto secure client campuses
- Background in construction or field execution
- Familiarity with NEC and multi-jurisdictional utility requirements
- Experience supporting EPC contractors or developers
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Detail-oriented with high standards for accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Effective communicator across technical and non-technical teams
- Flexible location; remote or hybrid depending on candidate
- Limited travel required for project coordination
- Possible hybrid position, but starting full-time in Martinez, CA (first 3-6 months)
