Sandhill is looking for an experienced Heavy-Duty Mechanic to work on heavy equipment at an aggregate mine in Kitimat, BC and Kelowna, BC
The right candidate is required to have relevant experience in the heavy construction and/or mining industries. Candidates are expected to be safety-minded, organized, and adaptable. This role reports directly to the VP Equipment and Logistics.
This is a seasonal position starting as soon as possible. Workers can expect to work 10-hour days on a rotation that is to be determined upon hiring. Travel between the two sites (Kitimat and Kelowna) will be required.

- Journeyperson Welder or Red Seal Trades Certification
- Valid driver’s license (class 5 minimum)
- Adaptable with multi-tasking and problem-solving skills

- On-the-job training is provided
- Experience working with crusher and/or wash plants
- Experience as a millwright
- Experience with line boring
- Construction or mining background
- First aid and/or other safety-related certifications
- Reports to: Directly to the VP
- Job performed on a mine or construction site including exposure to dust; noise; hot and/or cold temperatures; and in proximity of vehicles and other heavy equipment
- Shift is usually 10 hours per day dependent upon work schedule and rotation. Overtime is expected.
- Possible risk of ergonomic-related injury, repetitive stress injury, etc.
- Mental strain due to remaining alert for long hours, maintaining safe working procedures
- Physical strain due to bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching, lifting and moving heavy objects, greasing, fueling, climbing into and out of equipment, flying particles, etc.
- PPE required
1) Welding Operations – Read and interpret blueprints or welding process specifications. Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), plasma arc welding (PAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), oxy-acetylene welding (OAW), and resistance welding. Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment. Operate brazing and soldering equipment. Operate metal shaping machines such as brakes, shears, and other metal straightening and bending machines. Repair worn parts of metal products by welding on extra layer.
2) Mechanical Welding – Install, align, dismantle, and move stationary and mobile industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. Operate hoisting and lifting devices such as cranes, jacks, and tractors to position machinery and parts during installation, setup, and repair. Inspect and examine machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions. Install, troubleshoot, and maintain systems and machinery. Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts. Operate machine tools required during overhaul, maintenance, or setup of machinery.
3) Equipment Maintenance – Conduct pre-trip inspections before shift and report any issues found. Clean, lubricate, and refill equipment when not performed by an on-site mechanic or serviceperson.
4) Standard Corporate Responsibilities – Maintain the stability and reputation of the organization by complying with legal requirements. Conserve resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish the job results. Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Be conversant with relevant sections of the Safety Program. Understand WorkSafeBC acts and regulations, as well as the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC.
