We are seeking a motivated, career-oriented individual to join our Operations Department as a Water Treatment Plant Operator I (Assistant). This is an essential, hands-on role supporting the operation of a modern water treatment plant. You will work under the supervision of our Operations Manager and Chief Operator with mentoring by our Senior Operators to master all facets of water treatment.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, wants to build valuable computer-based technical skills, and is looking for a long-term career path in a stable, high-impact field of water treatment.
- Operate and monitor treatment processes to meet water quality and production goals
- Adjust plant flows and equipment settings to meet changing customer demand
- Verify chemical dosing and ensure treatment systems remain within required parameters
- Collect and analyze laboratory samples and perform routine testing
- Assist with maintenance work orders, calibration, troubleshooting, and minor repairs
- Maintain accurate computer-based logs, operating data, and reports
- Support the operations team by communicating issues and responding to process questions
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license
- Comfort working a night shift (6:00 pm – 6:00 am)
- Ability to perform moderate physical work including lifting, turning heavy valves, and climbing
- Basic math skills (simple algebra) and willingness to learn treatment chemistry
- Comfortable using computers for data entry and learning new software systems
- College degree, technical certificate, or related coursework
- Experience in process operations, mechanical maintenance, industrial work, utilities, or manufacturing
- Veterans with experience in roles such as Army Water Treatment Specialist, Navy Utilitiesman, Air Force Water and Fuel Systems Maintenance and Coast Guard Machinery Technician

Upon employment, you will begin as an Operator-in-Training and CLCJAWA will support your progression toward IEPA Water Plant Operator “Class A” Certification. This position offers a clear pathway toward higher operator classifications, increased responsibility, and long-term career growth.
- Salary Range: $68,568 – $87,466.
- Shift: This is a night shift position (6:00 pm – 6:00 am) and is eligible for overtime.
- Retirement: Participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension.
- Location: Based in beautiful Lake Bluff, IL.* Night shift operators typically work four 12-hour shifts for one week, then three 12-hour shifts each week for three weeks. Shifts are 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
