Salary Range:

- WTP Operator I: $27.61 - $35.90

- WTP Operator II: $30.46 - $39.59

- WTP Operator III: $32.89 – $42.76

All compensation offers are analyzed individually and take into consideration multiple factors including but not limited to years of experience, certification level, and educational background.

Position Overview

This position will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and repair of pumps, motors, treatment equipment, controls, and SCADA equipment. Maintain water production and quality for public consumption. Regulates system pressure, monitors booster stations and storage facilities, and observes treatment conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Follows the Clifton Water District safety regulations and rules and generally accepted safety standards for the job being performed.

- Operates, controls, and maintains all water treatment process control equipment in accordance with general procedures or standard operating practices.

- Controls and regulates all chemical additions used within the water treatment plant process and distribution system.

- Performs all operator’s daily duties to ensure treated water meets all state and federal drinking water standards and the Clifton Water District water quality goals.

- Accurately completes and maintains plant reports and operator forms complying with the frequency required.

- Performs continuous observation of water quality parameters and physical conditions within the treatment facility and related structures to ensure effective treatment.

- Performs routine water quality analysis at the prescribed frequencies as determined by the Clifton Water District.

- Performs maintenance duties of all water treatment plant equipment and facilities which may include intake structures, pump stations, tanks, remote sites, chlorine boosters, and all other mechanical and non-mechanical equipment used in the daily production of water. Maintenance shall be performed and completed according to generally accepted standards and in the timeframe as directed by Supervisor.

- Performs janitorial tasks including building and grounds maintenance on a regular and routine schedule.

- Provides backup to distribution and business office which may include service orders, restoring water service, assisting distribution department, responding to customer requests and complaints, and assisting with distribution emergency repairs.

- Available for and ability to conduct informational plant tours as requested and scheduled.

- Performs other duties as assigned and required.

Qualifications

Experience:

- WTP Operator I – One year of experience in water, construction, or any combination of education, experience, and/or training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

- WTP Operator II – Two to four years of experience in treatment operations and/or maintenance of water or wastewater utility, or a combination of experience and a Class D, C, or B certification.

- WTP Operator III – Four to six years of experience in treatment operations and/or maintenance of water or wastewater utility or a combination of experience and a Class D, C, B, or A certification.

Education:

- High school diploma, GED, or equivalency required.

- Bachelor’s Degree in environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, or a related field preferred.

Required Knowledge:

- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written communications and technical reports.

- Knowledge of and ability to apply complex mathematical and analytical equations and concepts.

- Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with co-workers, government agencies, contractors, and the general public.

- Ability to work independently and resolve potentially critical situations without supervision.

- Ability to accurately write and report test results without error.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

- WTP Operator I – Class D Water Operator’s Certification or ability to obtain one in 90 days of employment.

- All levels require a valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

Preferred Certifications:

- WTP Operator II – Class C or B Water Operator’s Certification.

- WTP Operator III – Class B or A Water Operator’s Certification.

Additional Requirements

Work Hours

- Full-time hours with 10 and 8-hour shifts.

- Evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime will be required.

- On-Call: Required to perform on-call duty and must be available for 24-hour alarm response on a rotating schedule.

Random drug and alcohol testing.

- Continuous physical activities include finger dexterity and repetitive motions.

Physical Requirements

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Visual Acuity Requirements

Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading; operation of machines/vehicles (including inspections); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

Working Conditions

- Subject to environmental working conditions both inside and outside.

- Subject to sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise levels.

- Subject to hazards includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals.

- There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.

- Subject to conditions that may require a respirator to be worn.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization. Able to interpret various instructions.

Mathematical Ability

Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percents, and to draw and interpret graphs.

Language Ability

Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias. Ability to prepare memos, reports, ad essays using proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Ability o communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis, correct pronunciation (or sign equivalent), and variation in worked order using present, perfect, and future tenses.
