is seeking a reliable, safety-focused Utility Operator (Valve & Hydrants) to perform skilled, journey-level work in the operation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and testing of the District’s water distribution system, with particular emphasis on valves, hydrants, and related appurtenances. This full-time represented role contributes directly to system reliability, water quality, and community service delivery.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic team environment, engage in hands-on fieldwork, and support critical infrastructure that ensures safe, dependable water distribution for the community.

About The Role

Under general supervision, the Utility Operator (Valve & Hydrants) installs, maintains, repairs, tests, and operates control valves, fire hydrants, blow-offs, pressure regulating stations, and other water distribution system components. The role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, consistent application of safety practices, and good communication skills when interacting with the public and internal stakeholders. Utility Operators work outdoors in varying weather conditions, operate heavy equipment, and respond to work orders and emergency requests.

What You Will Do

- Operate, inspect, and maintain water distribution system valves including full opening/closing for operational and emergency purposes

- Service, inspect, and maintain fire hydrants, including flow testing and lubrication

- Respond to service requests, emergencies, and leak/pressure complaints; locate and repair leaks and breaks

- Perform routine maintenance including flushing, cleaning, and exercising of system components

- Assist with installation and replacement of valves, hydrants, blow-offs, and related infrastructure components

- Operate District vehicles, tools, and equipment safely and perform minor maintenance

- Maintain accurate work records, reports, and documentation related to activities and inspections

- Follow safety requirements, including traffic control, confined space entry procedures, and proper use of PPE

- Coordinate work with other divisions and departments as necessary

What You Bring

- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform hands-on operational and maintenance work in the field

- Knowledge of water distribution system components, valve and hydrant operation, and basic hydraulics

- Ability to read maps, plans, and record work electronically or in written logs

- Good interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with customers and team members

- Commitment to safety procedures and responsible work practices

Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent and journey-level experience in water distribution system maintenance and operations, including valves and hydrants, or an equivalent combination of training and field experience. Public agency utility experience is preferred.

Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance program is required. Required safety certifications include those necessary for traffic control, confined space entry, and other field safety training.
