Water Utility Operator Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Water Utility operators are responsible for inspecting, sampling, maintenance, installation, construction, replacement, cleaning, and repair activities in and on public works facilities and equipment in the water collections and water distribution system.

DUTIES, RESONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:

The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees. Not all assigned duties may be listed. Some duties are assigned as needed by the Manager.

Installs, repair and maintains the water distribution and pumping stations which could include: installs and repairs water mains, fire-hydrants, check valves and water service lines; taps water mains, performs ground excavation work.

Operates and services equipment used in the repair, installation and maintenance of the systems including but not limited to: compressors, jack hammers, backhoe, and any other assigned light and/or heavy equipment.

Installs, relocates, and adjusts meter boxes and valve cans; installs, calibrates, and exchanges water meters.

Locates, identifies, and marks distribution system facilities, including valves, fire hydrants and blow-offs.

Inspects, operates and exercises valves to prevent freeze ups, flushes fire hydrants and dead-end water lines.

Maintain water pumping and storage facilities.

Perform routine and preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Assist with major equipment maintenance and repairs as assigned.

Participates in after hours emergency call-out duties which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

General mechanical, plumbing and electrical repairs as assigned. Reading and comprehending maps, diagrams, and regulations/policies.

District geography and street locations.

Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.

Use safe working practices in the performance of duties. Ensure proper safety practices are used.

Responsible for maintaining all Districts properties including: mowing, trimming, weeding, yard debris disposal.

Maintain sound decision-making skills. Perform other duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED)

One year experience in construction or utility work or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

REQUIRED LICENSES:

State Driver's License

Water Distribution 1 Certification is preferred

PHYSICAL and WORKING CONDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this position typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, work-space restrictions, and repetitive motions. Employees may be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays; in all weather conditions; under hazardous condition such as congested roadways, obstructed roads, high structures, around operating equipment; in a noisy environment; with chemicals; and with the physical ability and stamina to perform strenuous physical work associated with water utility maintenance work. Most work will be performed outdoors. Employees may be subjected continuous exposure to unpleasant elements such as dust, fumes, odors, high noise levels and outdoor weather conditions. Heavy Work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour
