Thayer Scale, a global leader in industrial weighing technology, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team in Pembroke, MA. This position is an important contributor to the design, configuration, standardization, and continuous improvement of Thayer’s industrial weighing and process control equipment, supporting industries ranging from food production to building products, to plastics & chemicals.
This role works cross-functionally with Sales, Service, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain to ensure product designs meet performance requirements and internal targets for quality, cost, and cycle time.

This position reports to the Engineering Manager, with day-to-day support and coordination provided within the Engineering team.

- Serve as a key technical contributor and design owner for assigned equipment designs, supporting configuration management, cost control requirements, and design-for-manufacturing principles.
- Drive product standardization to improve order flow from customer requirements through manufacturing execution.
- Process and maintain equipment designs for customer projects by evaluating specifications, sizing, and application requirements.
- Interface with Sales, Service, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and customers to support and execute customer order engineering, including equipment design and layout as required.
- Create detail and production drawings for custom and configured equipment, applying GD&T practices to support component and system quality.
- Ensure designs are fully documented, including component specifications and approved manufacturer lists (AML).
- Execute Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and support change control discipline.
- Create, upload, and maintain Bills of Material (BOMs) in the ERP system and distribute releases to production through Thayer’s engineering release process.
- Provide project coordination as needed to support quality, delivery, and cost targets.
- Support and drive Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) by participating in and promoting Lean improvement initiatives within Engineering.
- Partner with Production teams to support QA inspection and test procedures on equipment as required.
- Support Supply Chain in supplier qualification efforts and interface with suppliers on quality performance and technical questions.
- Produce engineering documentation and reports including test procedures, design verification reports, specifications, technical manuals, and user documentation.
- Provide mechanical engineering support to Sales, Service, and Production teams as needed.
- Review equipment specifications, quality documentation, and final test data as required prior to authorizing shipment.
- Develop and/or maintain simple performance metrics to support standardization, engineering responsiveness, and continuous improvement.
- Provide assistance to other company staff in the completion of daily duties as needed.
- Respond to urgent business needs or emergency situations when required.
- Perform other company-related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent degree from an ABET-accredited program.
- Fluency in English (written and spoken).
- Proficiency with 3D CAD systems (Autodesk Inventor preferred; SolidWorks experience welcomed) and ability to work effectively with 2D drawings (AutoCAD).
- 5+ years of experience designing or supporting industrial equipment, machinery, or capital equipment systems.- Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and the relationship between design, cost, and producibility.
- Experience working with ERP systems, BOM structures, and revision-controlled engineering releases.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook).- 8–12+ years of experience in industrial equipment design or order engineering with increased technical ownership.
- Demonstrated project coordination skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Experience supporting Lean initiatives and continuous improvement in an engineering/manufacturing environment.
