Purpose of Role

The Senior Manager, Metallurgy & Mineral Processing will directly manage metallurgists and report to the Vice-President Metallurgy & Engineering. The role will provide technical expertise to an area including, but not limited to: tax, law, IT, geology, resource modeling, metallurgy, permitting, environment, maintenance, mine planning, engineering, operations and / or global power. Coordinates the design and implementation of technical plans and projects, ensuring their alignment with short and medium term organizational strategies. Provides information to team members that address internal or external business and regulatory issues and implements recommendations that affect the direction of the business. Contributes to the maximization of operational efficiencies and profitability by staying updated on current and emerging practices and technologies that are a source of key competitive advantage.


Job Description

- Use advanced-level knowledge in managing mineral processing projects and operational support

- Directly manages metallurgical test work conducted in laboratories and testing facilities

- Acts as an ambassador for continuous improvement within metallurgy; introduces new methodologies and tools to improve current practices

- Interacts with Technical Services personnel to define characteristics of ore resources/ reserves and corporate initiatives for operations excellence

- Interacts with and/or supervises consultants and engineering groups engaged in development of specific Kinross processing projects at new or existing sites

- Collaborates with cross functional teams and considers the business impact of decisions on diverse groups; influences others to achieve project goals often without direct authority

- Participates in the study and execution of brown field and green field projects by representing the metallurgy field to the construction, commissioning, ramp-up and completion testing activities required of new or expansion projects

- Provides input to establishing and implementing best practices, policies and systems among our operations

- Provides technical input to site-based studies and operational improvements under mandate from site and corporate teams

- Collaborates with peers to identify and analyze risks and opportunities related to the function

- Participate in technical due diligence reviews

- Acts as an expert on queries and issues related to technical area of expertise

- Performs technical audits to support operations, exploration, and business development activities

- Participate in strategic business planning by reviewing operating sites

2. To advise the management group on mineral processing and metallurgy

- Prepares business cases and reports regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders

- Lead by example in all aspects of safety with operating sites and project designs

- Effective communicator with ability to influence

- Create and foster an inclusive work environment

- Mentor and coach site and corporate metallurgist

- Foresees and removes barriers to project success and escalates major issues.

- Directly manages corporate metallurgists

- Influences leaders and key stakeholders to buy into change efforts that will result in sustained competitive advantage


Sustainability Expectations

Assists in developing and implementing strategies and initiatives that support the organization’s 4PP. Proactively ensures Metallurgy and Mineral Processing initiatives fully consider health, safety and the impact on the environment and surrounding communities. Fosters a work environment where safety is a top priority. Assists in the development of policies and procedures relating to safety and the environment. Ensures that mine site technical staff and respective work areas are in compliance with Health and Safety policies and regulations. Ensures that mine site Processing staff have the necessary training, skills, knowledge, and tools to maintain Kinross’ high EHS performance and standards. Assists in accident and incident investigations and supports the implementation of new policies and procedures by agreed upon dates. Wears required safety equipment while at mine sites.

- Experience supervising or mentoring technical employees

- Very strong communications skills

- Team player with a strong inclination towards developing co-operative solutions

- Ability to quickly identify key technical and business issues

- Must be self-directed and work well in a highly unstructured environment

- Proven knowledge of mine site operations and resource requirements

- Demonstrates advanced-level knowledge in metallurgy and testing procedures

- Second languages skills in Spanish is a key asset

- Experience leading projects of varying scope and complexity

- Familiarity with accepted concepts, practices and procedures for predictive and preventative maintenance of mine processing systems and equipment

- Ability to travel often to our operating sites if required


Education and Experience

- Bachelor’s degree in Mineral Processing or Chemical Engineering

- Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise

- 15 – 20 years of related work experience
