We are currently seeking a Senior Ground Control Engineer to join our Mines Technical Services team in Voisey’s Bay, Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. Relocation to NL will be required for this role.
The role is a permanent on-site position, working 2 week on/2 week off schedule at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site.
As a Senior Ground Control Engineer, you will support mine execution of the Ground Control Management Plan for Vale’s Voisey’s Bay Operation, both Open Pit and Underground. This role provides technical expertise to Operations and local MTS teams, while providing both day-to-day technical support for managing the site-specific Ground Control Programs as well as integration into the longer-term 3–24-month execution plan.
- Maintain and develop the site-specific Ground Control and Seismic/Stability Risk Management Plans to comply with Vale’s policies/standards and meet all legal requirements, including Ground Control Management Plan updates and training on an annual basis at the mine site.
- Lead geo-mechanical risk assessment of "Life of Mine (LOM) Plans" and annual mine execution plans at the mine site to ensure that mining sequence and mine layouts are optimized to reduce seismic and/or ground instability risks to the business or people and enable safe and reliable production for both underground and open pit.
- Recommend action to ensure that safety and stability of pit walls and underground mine excavations is maintained with respect to geotechnical requirements. Including excavation optimization and Ground Control Instruction (GCI).
- Participate in the development of procedures/standards related to the field of ground control.
- Participate in Vale-required ground control / rock engineering audits and reviews (i.e. Seismic Review Board (SRB), HIRA and Integrated Operations Assessment (IOA) and develop action plans to address recommendations.
- Develop / deliver Annual Refresher Ground Control Hazard Awareness Training for all underground personnel.
- Develop solutions with respect to day-to-day and longer-term ground control issues based on field observations or operation reports.
- Respond rapidly to ground control issues and failures as required. Complete appropriate reporting and initiate action plans that will remove potential future hazards both in the affected area and similar areas.
- Communicate with Mine Operations and Mine Planning for alignment on the 0-24 month Ground Control and Seismic Risk Management Plan and execution.
- Regularly monitor the ground control work, including Q/A and Q/C of ground support installation in the underground operation.
- Install and develop both ground movement and seismic monitoring program instrumentation.
- Paste backfill testing and design.
- Interact and manage continuous improvement initiatives.
- Conduct investigation and peer reviews (as required) of major ground instabilities and large seismic events.
- Lead technical investigations of major ground instability incidents to prevent re-occurrence at the specific mine site and participate in similar technical reviews at multiple mine sites.

- Bachelor of Engineering (Mining preferred).
- Professional Engineering Designation (P.Eng) is required.- 4+ years of relevant experience in an underground mining environment.
- Sound understanding of ground control software applications.
- Knowledge/experience with Deswik software.
- Strong Influencing and collaboration competency.
