The Project Draftsman serves as a key link between Engineering, Project Management, and Production. This role is responsible not only for producing accurate construction drawings, but also for managing project flow, coordinating across teams, and ensuring deliverables are completed on schedule and in alignment with project requirements.
This position requires a detail-oriented individual who can take ownership of projects from initial layout through final issued drawings, while proactively communicating with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Prepare detailed structural and construction drawings using AutoCAD (or similar software)
- Interpret engineering markups, redlines, and design criteria into finalized plans
- Ensure drawings comply with applicable codes, standards, and company practices
- Revise drawings based on internal reviews, client feedback, and EOR comments
- Manage assigned projects from kickoff through final engineering deliverables
- Track project status, deadlines, and priorities across multiple jobs
- Coordinate with Engineering, Project Managers, Procurement, and Drafters
- Identify conflicts (layout, constructability, materials) early and propose solutions
- Ensure alignment between plans, calculations, and client requirements
- Serve as the primary point of contact for drafting-related project updates
- Communicate proactively regarding schedule risks, delays, or scope changes
- Coordinate with Engineers of Record (EORs) for revisions and final approvals
- Provide clear updates to leadership and project teams
- Perform internal QA/QC on drawings before submission
- Verify dimensions, member sizes, and connection details for accuracy
- Ensure consistency between drawings, calculations, and project specifications
- Maintain drawing standards and templates
- Assist in developing drafting standards, workflows, and best practices
- Support implementation of new tools (e.g., 3D modeling, Tekla, automation)
- Contribute to improving efficiency, turnaround time, and coordination across teams
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or related field (preferred)
- 3–5+ years of drafting experience (structural or construction preferred)- Proficient in AutoCAD (experience with Civil 3D or Tekla is a plus)
- Strong understanding of structural systems and construction practices
