Perform major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles.
- Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) preferred or obtained within 90 days
- Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engineer maintenance and repair
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
- Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
- Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
- Ability to troubleshoot and rebuild brake systems; air/hydraulic
- Ability to operate A/C recovery and charging equipment
- Ability to operate electric ark and acetylene welders preferred
- Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
- Ability to pass the state required physical examination for bus driver
- Ability to pass required bus driver safety training
- Acceptable driving record
- Ability to operate bus
- Five years or more experience as a mechanic preferred
- Evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment.
- Help mechanic’s helper evaluate minor mechanical problems.
- Inspect repairs completed by mechanic’s helper
- Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, etc.
- Analyze engine performance and perform tune-ups as needed.
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care.
- Help train mechanic helpers.
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
- Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
- Operate buses and vehicles as needed.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
- Must provide and use own hand and air tools.
- Conduct work in a manner consistent with Texas Hazard Communication Act.
- Conduct work in a manner consistent with guidelines for Pathogen handling.
- Maintain Confidentiality.
- Other duties as assigned
- School buses, district vehicles, grounds equipment, automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack and lift equipment.
- Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, and reaching. Work outside and inside, on slippery surfaces, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposure to noise, dampness, humidity, excessive heat, excessive cold, toxic chemicals, exhaust, and fumes.
