Fleet Maintenance Technician

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, perform and undertake a variety of broad to specific fleet repair, maintenance and upkeep of work assignments.

SUPERVISION

General supervision is provided by the Fleet Maintenance Manager.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following is a summary of essential functions and duties required for the position of Fleet Maintenance Technician. - Must be able to perform mechanical maintenance and repair of cars, trucks, and other light, medium and heavy-duty District vehicles and equipment.

- Able to diagnose and repair the district’s automotive equipment.

- Performs minor repairs to the brakes, steering front end, and electrical systems of the trucks, minor overhauls, and minor vehicle component repairs and maintenance.

- Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair a wide range of mechanical, electrical or electronic system malfunctions.

- Keeps track of repair parts and reports time on work orders.

- Utilizes and adheres to the district’s system of routine automotive maintenance preventive care.

- Installs new ignition systems, changes or recharges batteries, and replaces transmissions and other parts.

- Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specific safety devices on trucks and makes necessary adjustments.

- Repairs and maintains electric, diesel, and gasoline industrial trucks.

- Reads job order and observes and listens to truck operation to determine malfunction and plan work procedures.

- Inspects automotive work once completed in ensure that equipment is in a safe and operating condition.

- Determine compliance with established repair, maintenance and upkeep standards, operations and expectations.

- Maintain cleanliness of work area and tools.

- Perform regularly scheduled, emergency repair and/or preventative maintenance work.

- Performs any other duties as required and assigned by the Fleet Maintenance Manager. Perform duties of immediate supervisor or coworkers as necessary to ensure continuity of operations during absences.

- Maintains safe work practices according to District’s rules and policies.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and qualifications required to perform the essential functions and duties of the position of Fleet Maintenance Technician.

Education and Experience Guidelines – Below is a summary of the minimum educational qualification requirements for the position of Fleet Maintenance Technician.

Education/Training: High School Diploma or GED. Bilingual preferred (English and Spanish).

Experience: Two (2) years of journey level automotive or diesel mechanic experience. Qualified candidates will have their own tools.

License or Certificate:

- Texas Class Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B, preferred Class A and must have an acceptable driving record.

- Must be able to obtain and maintain an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification with one (1) year of appointment.

- Must have a gas and diesel engine certificate at the time of appointment.

Environment: This position functions in both indoor and outdoor environments due to the nature of the District’s business and various work locations. Travel from site to site will be required. May be exposed to noise, dust, and inclement weather conditions.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a professional office and field environment; to stand, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, squat, climb ladders, and walk on uneven terrain, loose soil, and sloped surfaces; to lift and/or carry light weights; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: Must be able to see in the normal visual range, with or without corrective devices. Must be able to read.

Hearing: Must be able to hear in the normal audio range, with or without corrective devices.

Travel: Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
