Under the direct supervision of the Plant Manager, the Deputy Plant Manager
supports daily operations, basic maintenance coordination, and documentation tasks for the
St. John Water Treatment Plantand its associated facilities. This role focuses on ensuring continuity of operations, compliance with water quality standards, and supporting plant personnel in routine and corrective activities.
The
Deputy Plant Managerworks closely with operations and maintenance staff. However, this role does not hold full supervisory authority but may provide functional guidance during assigned tasks.

- Support day‑to‑day operation of the potable water treatment plant, including monitoring process parameters and reporting deviations.
- Assist with routine inspections, data collection, and maintaining operational logs.
- Provide basic support in coordinating preventive and corrective maintenance activities, including work order creation and closure in the CMMS.
- Assist with contractor coordination, ensuring reports and documentation are collected and filed.
- Support SCADA system use at a user level for monitoring alarms and trends.
- Contribute to safety compliance, including participating in ERP drills and supporting CAE and safety permit documentation.
- Help develop and maintain standard operating procedures and operational documentation.
- Assist with inventory tracking, supply requests, and minor purchasing tasks (under Manager approval).
- Prepare basic technical and administrative reports.
- Participate in stakeholder interactions when required, including plant tours or inspections.
- Other duties as required.
- Basic principles of water treatment processes, water transmission, and storage.
- Fundamental laboratory concepts and process control.
- Basic mechanics, pumps, valves, and instrumentation.
- SCADA systems (user level) and CMMS platforms.
- Health & safety practices and regulatory compliance basics.
- Perform operational tasks following established procedures.
- Collect, record, and interpret basic operational data.
- Communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and external partners.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Follow safety protocols and identify unsafe conditions.
- Equivalent to an associate's degree or technical training in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical/electrical engineering, environmental sciences, or a related field.
- Two to three years of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of water treatment facilities or similar industrial installations.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a New Brunswick Class I or II Water Treatment Operator Certificate within 12–18 months.
- Class I Water Distribution Certificate is desirable.
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, climb, and work in varied environmental conditions.
- Ability to lift 25 lbs frequently and 50 lbs occasionally.
- Ability to operate basic tools and equipment used in plant operations.
