The Controller position will oversee accounting operations and support financial statement preparation, including regulatory reports. The position will manage adherence to industry standards, GAAP and regulatory compliance. Additionally, the Controller will manage the Finance and Accounting team, optimize processes, and implement financial controls to enhance efficiency and mitigate risk, while leveraging technology for automation. This position will continue the development of the highly capable and motivated team responsible for the maintenance of accurate financial records and maintaining an effective system of financial control and ensuring the team supports the wider organization on all day-to-day financial management issues.
A. Manage Chugach’s finances in accordance with Board Policies and process guidelines.
B. Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and regulatory compliance reports.
C. Develop and implement improvement programs within the Finance and Accounting department in coordination with other departments to ensure financial integrity and efficient use of resources.
D. Monitor and manage timely identification and compliance with evolving accounting guidance, provide US GAAP interpretation and prepare technical memorandums that document issues.
E. Manage the development and release of presentation materials for stakeholders and management.
F. Manage audit programs, including annual financial statements, annual workers compensation, federal and state single audits, Department of Labor, State of Alaska and labor agreement payroll audits.
G. Supports company goals of continuous improvement and operational excellence at strategic and tactical levels. Including reviewing area of responsibility for improvement opportunities to initiate projects.
H. Communicate initiatives to management and participate on project teams.
I. Implement and enforce internal control policies and procedures.
J. Ensure compliance and update the CEO, CFO and Audit & Finance Committee.
K. Assist in the preparation and analysis of annual budgets and forecasts.
L. Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in financial planning and analysis.
M. Analyze financial performance, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
N. Provides leadership for the attainment of departmental goals. Counsels, reviews and evaluates subordinates' performance. Plans for staffing, training and development of department personnel.
O. Create and maintain monthly and quarterly finance calendar for deadline adherence and processes, including financial close, management reporting package, financial statement issuance and compliance reporting.
P. Direct, manage and operate financial accounting software.
Q. Serves as a representative in banking relationships.
R. Review and submit government surveys and other compliance reports.
S. Manage day-to-day liquidity utilizing unsecured short-term vehicles.
T. Assist VP, Finance and Accounting with debt management, bond purchase transactions, Indenture of Trust and debt agreement compliance.
U. Other duties as assigned.
RelationshipsThis position supervises the Manager of General Accounting and Manager of Plant Accounting. This position oversees a unionized division.
Work is performed in a standard office environment. Frequent long hours due to deadlines and seasonal workloads may be required. Occasional travel outside the state may be required.
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance, required. Master’s Degree, CPA and/or CMA preferred.
Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience, including supervisory, in accounting, finance and budgeting, required. Experience with accounting principles, financial reporting and regulatory compliance, required. Knowledge of FERC system of accounts is preferred. Experience working in a utility/union environment preferred.
