POSITION OVERVIEW:
Startec Corporate Services is currently recruiting for an
Assistant Controllerto work at our Shepard office location (
9423 Shepard Road SE. Calgary, Alberta T2C 4R6). The ideal candidate will help ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain a strong control environment, and support both internal and external stakeholders. This role is a key partner to the Controller and will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, support budgeting and forecasting, and help drive process improvements.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):
Financial Accounting and Reporting (50%)
- Oversee general accounting functions, including GL, AR, AP, fixed assets, and payroll accounting
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
- Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with ASPE
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and accounting standards
- Assist with technical accounting issues and the implementation of new accounting standards
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, and other departments, providing financial insights
- Support financial review of commercial decisions and agreements
- Manage and mentor accounting staff; assist with professional development and performance reviews
- Identify and implement process improvements to streamline operations and improve accuracy
- Support ERP and system improvements or upgrades
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CPA in progress preferred)
- 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting and/or industry experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics)
- Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with financial reporting tools
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams
- Ability to communicate and work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and build effective relationships
- Proactive mindset, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
