The Summer Intern, Emergency Management will support the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in advancing DC Water’s emergency preparedness, response, and resilience initiatives. This role will assist with the development and maintenance of emergency plans, support training and exercise activities, contribute to hazard mitigation and critical infrastructure protection efforts, and help coordinate Incident Management Team (IMT) readiness. The intern may also assist with stakeholder engagement, data collection and analysis, and interagency coordination with local, state, regional, and federal emergency response partners.

Your essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with training and exercise planning, including meeting coordination, exercise facilitation support, and administrative reporting.
- Support the maintenance and enhancement of the emergency management SharePoint site to expand staff access to resources and tools.
- Assist with emergency response plan updates, playbook development, and other emergency planning activities as needed.
- Support DC Water’s mass notification system by helping build message templates, assisting with staff training, and performing related administrative tasks.
- Assist the Planning Section during activation of DC Water’s Incident Management Team (IMT) by taking notes, developing incident-related documentation, and supporting briefings.
- Support stakeholder engagement and coordination efforts related to emergency preparedness and response initiatives.The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability necessary for an individual to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. Reasonable amounts of training are provided.
General understanding of emergency management principles and practices through coursework or related exposure.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Must be currently enrolled fulltime in an undergraduate or graduate program
Must have at least 30 credit hours complete
Must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average
Basic project management skills, including task tracking and coordination.
Strong reading and writing skills for documentation and communication.
Ability to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
Willingness and ability to work in various environmental conditions, including outdoor settings during drills, exercises, or field assessments.
Coursework or internship experience in emergency management, homeland security, public administration, or related fields.
Experience supporting training, exercises, or emergency planning activities.
Familiarity with SharePoint or similar content management systems.
Exposure to mass notification systems or emergency communication platforms.
Experience with meeting coordination, note-taking, and document development in a professional setting.
Understanding of infrastructure resilience and hazard mitigation concepts.
Preferred Majors: Emergency Management, Disaster Management, Homeland Security, Public Health, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Law Enforcement, or related fields.
Familiarity with the Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS).
Proficiency in project management, including task tracking and coordination.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities and remain flexible in dynamic environments.
Eagerness to learn and contribute to a mission-driven team.
