Rainy River Mine

Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.


The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About the Role


Schedule: 5/2, 4/3 – 9 hour days



Position Reports To: Environment Manager



Position Overview

The Water Specialist is a technical support role within the Environment Department at New Gold’s Rainy River Mine. This position provides subject‑matter expertise and technical advisory support for site water management and water treatment facilities. The Water Specialist supports hydrology, water quality, discharge compliance, and regulatory reporting programs, and acts as a key technical liaison between environmental staff, water treatment operators, and site management.


The Water Specialist demonstrates a strong commitment to Health & Safety, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance, and actively supports the prevention of unsafe practices or non‑compliant activities.


The role combines technical review, data management, and reporting, and may provide task‑level coordination or oversight to temporary or contract staff supporting water‑related activities.



Key Responsibilities

- Oversee and technically review surface water, groundwater, effluent, and hydrometric monitoring programs conducted by Environmental Technicians.

- Review water sampling results, river flow measurements, and water level data collected by Environmental Technicians to confirm accuracy, completeness, and compliance with approved procedures.

- Work collaboratively with the Environment Supervisor (Environmental Technicians’ supervisor) to ensure field data collection is adequate, timely, and aligned with regulatory and site requirements.

- Provide technical direction and feedback to Environmental Technicians on water sampling, stream gauging, and monitoring methodologies as required.

- Support coordination of installation, inspection, maintenance, and calibration of hydrometric and water quality monitoring stations.

- Manage environmental monitoring data within EQuIS or similar databases, including QA/QC checks.

- Analyze hydrological, hydrogeological, and water quality datasets to support compliance and operational decision‑making.

- Assist with development, updates, and interpretation of site water balance and groundwater models.

- Prepare and review internal and external technical reports related to water management, discharge performance, and regulatory compliance.

- Support completion, review, and submission of regulatory reports related to discharge flow, discharge water quality, and water treatment performance, including ECA reports, MECP submissions, MEWS reports, and MDMER reporting (SWIM).

- Provide technical review and oversight of water treatment–related data prior to submission to regulators.

- Coordinate notifications to regulators (e.g., ECCC) related to discharge commencement or non-compliance events.

- Support environmental inspections and audits related to water treatment systems and discharge compliance.

- Support quality control and quality assurance requirements under the Environmental Management System (EMS).

- Provide technical advisory support to water treatment operations, including review of daily operational and water quality data submissions.

- Verify and support calculation of water treatment dosing requirements based on established procedures, operational guidance, and water quality results (no engineering design responsibility).

- Work directly with water treatment operators to identify, correct, and document data discrepancies or data quality issues.

- Review performance trends to support effective operation of water treatment systems and regulatory compliance.

- Update and refine water treatment monitoring plans, discharge monitoring programs, and reporting workflows as required.

- Support updates to water treatment–related SOPs, sampling programs, and QA/QC procedures.

- Provide technical guidance to Operations and site teams on water treatment data interpretation and compliance expectations.

- Provide technical oversight of water treatment consultants and third-party service providers.

- Review consultant deliverables related to water treatment, discharge performance, and monitoring programs.

- Coordinate with Operations, SVS, and maintenance teams regarding reagent inventory, sampling requirements, and operational data needs.

- Support Water Management Meetings through preparation of technical content, slide updates, and follow-up on assigned actions.



Qualifications

- Degree or diploma in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, or a related discipline.

- Minimum 2 years of environmental field experience in a mining or industrial setting (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

- Demonstrated experience with water and effluent monitoring, sampling techniques, and field instrumentation.

- Experience with large environmental datasets and data management systems (EQuIS preferred).

- Familiarity with water balance or groundwater modeling tools (GoldSim and/or FeFlow considered an asset).

- Understanding of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and regulatory reporting frameworks

- Knowledge of mining and milling processes and their potential environmental effects.
