Situated 10 kilometers west of picturesque Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.
Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. The area provides the opportunity to live and work in a vibrant community with its own university and within easy reach of world class ski resorts, championship golf courses, mountain biking trails, popular recreational lakes and award-winning vineyards.
Position Overview: We currently have an exciting opportunity for a junior water scientist, commencing in April 2026. This position will report to the Senior Water Specialist, and provide assistance to the Environment, Lands and Permitting and Underground Technical Services teams. The position includes a blend of field and office work and will provide exposure to wide variety of mining and environmental projects.
- Collect water samples, record and compile seepage information, and contribute to water management for the underground mine;
- Track and monitor the underground water balance and the site wide water balance;
- Compile data and prepare charts and memos to provide input to water management activities;
- Support hydrogeological investigations and water-related risk management teams;
- Support surface water and groundwater monitoring activities and associated data management;
- Contribute to the companies environmental, social and governance team;
- Project coordination and contractor management;
- This is a safety sensitive role and will act as the representative for the environment team in the underground mine; and
- Other duties as required.
- A degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or Environmental/Mining Engineering;
- Registered, or eligible for registration as a professional in training (GIT, EIT, P.Ag among others may be acceptable);
- 1-3 years of experience relevant to the key responsibilities, with a preference to underground mining experience;
- Microsoft Office and data management skills; and
- Class 5 Driver’s License and access to personal transportation.
- Experience in the mining sector or water management in other sectors;
- Organization and analysis of monitoring data; and
- Technical writing, presentation and report compilation.
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
- Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
- Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
- Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
The anticipated salary range for this position is between $91,000 and $103,000. A competitive performance bonus plan and benefits will be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
