DeLong’s Inc. is a steel bridge manufacturing company specializing in the fabrication and assembly of structural steel for transportation and infrastructure projects. We support complex engineering, manufacturing, and construction efforts with a strong focus on safety, precision, and quality.
The Surveying Intern will assist engineering and project teams with surveying and layout activities in both field and office settings. Responsibilities include collecting and verifying survey data, establishing and maintaining control points, mapping plant structures and utilities, and compiling accurate survey documentation. The intern will use total station equipment and AutoCAD Civil 3D to support plant layouts, construction verification, and future project planning while following established safety procedures and company standards.
Field Surveying and Data Collection: Locate, verify, and document existing control points and property pins throughout the plant. Operate a total station to shoot and record existing control points while ensuring accuracy and consistency of field measurements.
Control Point Layout and Verification: Establish new control points using existing benchmarks and control networks to support future plant projects and assemblies. Verify alignment and accuracy of both new and existing control points for ongoing and future use.
Site Mapping and Layout: Use total station equipment in conjunction with established control points to map existing plant structures, utilities, and machinery. Assist with layout verification to support engineering, construction, and assembly activities.
Data Compilation and Documentation: Collect, organize, and validate all survey data to ensure completeness and accuracy. Maintain clear records of measurements, coordinates, and field notes for reference and project continuity.
CAD Modeling and Plant Mapping: Compile survey data into AutoCAD Civil 3D to create accurate digital models and drawings of the plant, including control points, structures, and equipment layouts. Update drawings as needed to reflect field conditions.
Collaboration and Project Support: Work closely with engineering and project teams to support surveying needs, communicate findings, and assist with planning and execution of plant projects.
Culture Alignment: Ensure alignment with the company’s purpose, mission, core values, safety focus, strategy, and goals. Foster a positive and adaptable work environment. All employees are responsible for the technical aspects of the position while demonstrating the company’s core values (People First, Respect and Integrity, Innovation, Dependability, Enjoyment).
Continuous Improvement & Change Management: Drive positive change by staying current on trends, best practices, regulatory updates, and new technologies. Recommend improvements to policies and procedures to align with strategic objectives. Identify opportunities to reduce waste and improve efficiencies, working with the team to implement process enhancements. Take action when needed.
The ideal candidate will have some exposure to AutoCAD Civil 3D through coursework or hands on experience and a basic understanding of surveying terminology and practices, including total stations, control points, benchmarks, and back sights. Strong planning and reasoning skills are important, along with the ability to think through layout and measurement challenges in both field and office settings. The candidate should be highly organized, detail oriented, and capable of managing and compiling data accurately while working independently or as part of a team.
The Surveying Intern supports plant surveying and layout efforts by assisting with field data collection, control point layout, site mapping, and CAD documentation. This internship provides hands-on experience using surveying equipment and AutoCAD Civil 3D while working closely with engineering and project teams on active plant projects.
