Since 2009, Gowest has expanded its land holdings in the North Timmins Gold Project (“NTGP”) area to cover a total of 109 square km in the Timmins gold camp, with much of the additional lands being located along the same geological structures – along the largely undeveloped Pipestone Fault, believed to be a splay off the prolific Porcupine-Destor Fault, which has produced the majority of the 145 million ounces of gold produced historically along the Abitibi-Greenstone belt – that host Gowest’s Bradshaw Gold Deposit (formerly Frankfield East) as well as a number of other gold showings.
Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Superintendent of Health, Safety & Security will proactively manage the operational requirements in the development, implementation and review of strategy, policy, procedures, standards, and practices relating to health and safety, security and emergency response objectives in a manner which ensures compliance with Provincial and Federal regulations. This position drives the operation towards ownership of best practices and behaviours for a secure, safe, and healthy work environment. As a member of the Bradshaw Leadership team, this role participates in the overall management of the operations to ensure that production and profitability targets are achieved safely.
- Accountable for own health and safety performance in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
- Wear required PPE at all times on site in production environments.
- Be alert and observe hazards, correct and report unsafe conditions.
- Follow operating procedures and comply with all regulatory requirements.
- Develop and facilitate the implementation of safety risk assessment and action plans and safe operating procedures in a manner which meets best practice standards and ensures continuous improvement in the reduction of accident and injury within the mine.
- Monitor and report on safety performance of the mine and provide recommendations for enhancements and improvements.
- Drive the development of a culture based on ownership and accountability to increase safety awareness.
- Work in a collaborative spirit with the leadership team and entire workforce.
- Manage the identification, investigation, reporting and input regarding the causes for safety incidents and identify prevention strategies.
- Manage the internal and external audit requirements and make recommendations for improved performance relating to areas of non-compliance.
- Provide ongoing training, resources and development for mine personnel relating to best practices in safety and security.
- Ensure compliance with all safety requirements, drug and alcohol policy, environmental and other work site rules, and regulations.
- Ensure knowledge of occupational health and safety regulation and applicable acts and codes is kept current and up to date.
- Liaise with key contractors, regulatory bodies, and industry professionals.
- Ensure provision of security, inspection, control, and monitoring services to effectively secure the Bradshaw mine.
- Ensure company property is protected against theft and/or damage.
- Oversee the monitoring and control access to the work site ensuring only authorized personnel enter the premises.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Degree/Diploma in Health and Safety Management.
- G Class Driver’s License (Required).
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in a similar leadership role in mining/heavy industry.
- Demonstrated effective problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Mine rescue experience is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership and team building skills with the ability to build positive working relationships with a diverse workforce.
- A thorough understanding of drug and alcohol testing.
- Knowledge and understanding of safety and environment standards pertaining to legislation and the mining industry in Canada. Ontario experience is highly desirable.
- The role is located at the Bradshaw Gold Project, which is approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Timmins, Ontario, Canada.
- The ideal candidate for the role will work a schedule of 4 days on and 3 off, 10-hour days. Although you will be assigned a work schedule, this is not a guaranteed schedule of hours and your work hours may vary with the needs of the company.
