The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Geophysics Summer Student to join the talented team at the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS). The AGS provides geological information and expertise to the Government of Alberta, the AER, industry, and the public to support the exploration, sustainable development, regulation, and conservation of Alberta’s natural resources.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in both office and field environments. You will work directly with geoscientists in the Applied Geoscience group, contributing to investigations of current and historical induced seismicity in Alberta. The field component includes performing maintenance on AGS passive seismic monitoring stations throughout the province. This position is well suited for a quick learner who is enthusiastic about teamwork, research, and working outdoors.
- Develop statistical and analytical scripts using Copilot, MATLAB, and Python to automate the extraction and analysis of seismic event reports across Alberta, enhancing monitoring capabilities.
- Collaborate with staff geoscientists to implement machine-learning-based event detection algorithms, classify detection results, and evaluate their performance on large seismic datasets.
- Improve event-magnitude estimation algorithms and standardize calculation workflows to enhance accuracy, particularly for noisy waveforms and small-magnitude events.
- Assist with the maintenance and installation of passive seismic monitoring stations throughout Alberta.
- Currently enrolled in the Bachelor’s degree program in Geophysics or a related field.
- Strong understanding of seismological concepts and ability to apply them on various research topics.
- Strong programming skills in Copilot scripting, MATLAB, and/or Python.
- Foundational understanding of passive seismic monitoring networks, with familiarity in seismometers, accelerometers, and basic electronics.
- Previous geological or geophysical field experience is considered an asset.
