The Protection, Control and Telecommunications Engineering Division is responsible for engineering BC Hydro’s Protection
& Control systems and Telecommunication Networks, and ensuring these systems contribute to safe and reliable operation
of BC Hydro’s electric system while meeting performance requirements of system planners, regulators customers and other
stakeholders. The division provides engineering studies, standards, specifications, design solutions, construction
documentation, and engineering oversight of work done by engineering service partners. We provide technical support
during procurement, construction, testing and commissioning, and provide asset lifecycle support with critical failure
analysis and emergency operational support for restoring customer supply in the event of forced outages. The division is
responsible for deploying and sustaining numerous regulatory bulk electric system standards, including cybersecurity
standards for Industrial Control and Telecommunication systems.
We have an exciting opportunity in the Protection & Control Design department for Senior Engineer in the P&C
Infrastructure Design team supporting ‘Transmission Stations’, ‘Transmission Lines’, or ‘Interconnections and PCM’ projects
portfolios. This role requires demonstrated experience as an electrical engineer with the design of transmission utility
substation P&C systems with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV and experience working with utility design solutions in
an electric utility environment. P&C design will include the use of Advanced Design Tools for data modeling and detailed
design using AutoCAD Electrical and Autodesk compatible tools.
Working closely with team members and other Engineering teams, the Senior P&C Engineer provides technical leadership
and guidance and successfully carries out the following duties:
- As an experienced professional engineer, engages in the engineering of electrical utility P&C systems. Analyze and
- Manages medium and large sized projects and work packages, writes specifications and standards, estimates capital
costs, coaches, mentors, and provides technical and site support during installation and commissioning of P&C equipment.
- Provide work leadership to a team in a lead engineer role including reporting out on work completion of the team or sub-
- Provide technical direction to engineers, consultants and technical support staff, coordinate projects of low to high
complexity, plan and manage project resources and develop innovative methods of design for engineering problems.
- Review work of the project team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results
and adherence to accepted engineering standards and practices.
- Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues to determine relative
priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
- Chair meetings to address engineering problems, attends and addresses seminars, courses, meetings, and conferences,
and prepares and delivers presentations to various audiences.
- A degree in Electrical Engineering (preferably power engineering) recognized by Canadian Universities.
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in the engineering, design, and implementation of Electric Utility Protection and
Control systems.

The successful candidate shall demonstrate:
- In depth technical knowledge in the design and implementation of transmission P&C systems for utility substations with
- Technical knowledge in transmission protection & control system philosophy for transmission lines and major electrical
equipment such as transformers, capacitors, reactors, circuit breakers, and disconnect switches.
- Technical knowledge in the electrical, mechanical, control, monitoring, metering, and operating requirements of
- Ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are of a challenging and
- Technical knowledge of NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection standards and requirements.
- Understanding of Advanced Design data modeling using AutoCAD Electrical and Autodesk compatible tools. Ability to
lead standards and documentation development, mentor, and guide less experienced design resources, and actively
participate in BIM/AutoCAD Electrical industry groups or committees to advance industry adoption, application toolkit
development, and inform BC Hydro design practices.
- Effectiveness in work leadership with ability to coordinate and lead multiple projects, and plan and manage project
