Employment Type: Full Time – Limited Term - 12 months with potential extension.

Salary Range: T3, Level 5, $102,000 - $120,000 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator's (AER's) mandate has expanded to include new areas of resource development, including minerals. This expansion is part of the Alberta government's economic recovery plan to diversify the economy and accelerate growth in new and emerging sectors.

As the Specialist, Mineral Resources, you will join the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch’s Geoscience Innovation team, which is a multidisciplinary and multicultural group of geoscientists and geospatial data experts leveraging deep technical expertise, creativity, and a future-focused mindset to reveal and communicate aspects of Alberta’s subsurface critical to the province’s energy future. Public geoscience is central to our mission, and our products aim for maximum utility by the public, industry, and decision-makers. The team is split across Edmonton and Calgary and enjoys a flexible mix of remote and in-person working styles.

You will play a critical role in the evaluation of Alberta’s mineral resources by leading and participating in projects, integrating vast new and legacy data sets, and supporting the competency development of your colleagues through knowledge-sharing activities. You will actively communicate on mineral resource topics internally and externally.

What your day-to-day will look like:

- Support the development and delivery of impactful public geoscience projects designed to characterize mineral systems and mineral occurrences of Alberta through integration and interpretation of diverse datasets, and collaboration with internal staff and external stakeholders.

- Develop reports, maps, journal articles, and conference presentations for public consumption.

- Advise on field work planning and if possible, lead or participate in field mapping projects on the Shield in NE Alberta (hard-rock) or other parts of the province (soft-rock).

- Maintain current state knowledge and awareness of minerals industry activity and related geoscience research and communicate relevant information to AGS Leadership Team or via seminars/working sessions with other branches, or with external stakeholder groups.

- Lead and participate in minerals-focused knowledge sharing sessions.

- Provide support for regulatory activities related to minerals.

What we’re looking for in you:

- MSc or PhD in geology or related field.

- 5+ years of relevant work in industry or academia.

- Eligibility for membership with APEGA.

- Experience integrating field, laboratory, geophysical (airborne gravity and magnetic surveys, downhole wireline data, hyperspectral core scanning), and remote sensing datasets—both in 2D and 3D—to characterize mineral systems and occurrences.

- Proficiency in data manipulation, visualization, mapping, and geological modelling.

- Competence in igneous and metamorphic petrology, basin‑hosted mineral systems, and associated geochemistry.

- Strong understanding of mineral systems, occurrences, associations, and alteration patterns, with emphasis on Shield‑ and basin‑hosted mineral deposits observed in Alberta. Knowledge of Alberta’s past, current, and prospective mineral resources is preferred.

- Experience in fieldwork planning and geological mapping is preferred.

- Regulatory experience is considered an asset.

- Strong communication and mentorship skills.

- Additional safety training will be provided as necessary, e.g., standard first aid, wilderness first aid, animal awareness, H2S Alive, etc.

- When participating in field work, expect to spend 1-3 weeks each summer in the field, potentially in very remote areas of Alberta. Carrying field gear and samples several kilometers, living in a field camp for 1 – 2 weeks, flying in small aircraft, and working at heights may be required.

- Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.
