Operations Apprentice

Description Position Summary:

The Operations Apprentice is responsible for assisting experienced operators in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility. This position requires working on a rotating shift.

Must have knowledge of the principles and methods used in the treatment and disposal of wastewater and biosolids, as well as understand and comprehend the laws, rules and regulations. Must be knowledgeable in the occupational hazards and the safety precautions to be exercised in the treatment of wastewater and biosolids, as well as demonstrate the ability to learn and retain technical information. Mechanical and/or problem-solving aptitude, as well as computer literacy, is required. Must be able to read, write, communicate and understand English sufficiently to perform the functions of the position. Must be able to understand and execute oral and written directions.

Minimum of one year (1) experience for internal applicants. External applicants must have a minimum of three (3) years of related experience, preferably in wastewater treatment.

High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate. Satisfactory completion of both the Introduction to Wastewater course and Advanced Wastewater course is required. Completion of Advanced Wastewater Collections course preferred.

A valid New Jersey driver’s license is preferred but not required. Must obtain a S1 license within 2 years or must be actively pursuing a S1 license. Actively pursuing consists of taking the associated State license exam at least 2 times per year until the license is obtained.

Ability to perform the essential functions of the position as they relate to physical and mental requirements to ensure the health and safety of oneself, and others is maintained. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as but not limited to canister and dust masks as well as SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus). Perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and the whole body, such as climbing (including ladders), lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping and handling heavy objects.

Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into and work in Confined Spaces while wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to canister and dust masks as well as Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

The expected base pay range is $57,859 to $88,136. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, education, training, and formal credentials.
