Safety Training Superintendent

We are seeking a Line College Instructor to join our team:

This is a unique opportunity as ULCS partners with St. Petersburg College.


Job Description

- Key Considerations & Opportunities:

- Flexible Scheduling: The college is open to tailoring schedules around the instructor’s availability.

- New Training Center: Construction of a state-of-the-art lineman training facility is planned to begin next year. The incoming instructor will have the chance to help shape how this facility is utilized from the ground up.

- Program Expansion: The college is actively exploring underground (UG) and fiber training classes, broadening the skill sets offered to students and aligning with industry needs.

- Weekend Class Options: To meet growing demand, the college is considering adding weekend sessions, opening the program to more students and diversifying teaching schedules.

- Program Popularity & Growth: The lineman program is currently the most popular program offered at the college, with strong enrollment and high demand. This means the instructor will be stepping into a thriving environment with plenty of room to grow professionally.

- Curriculum & Support: The curriculum is already established, and support staff are in place to assist with logistics, student coordination, and administrative needs. This ensures a smooth transition and allows the instructor to focus on teaching and mentoring.

Program Details:

- Class Schedule: November 18, 2025 – May 21, 2026

- Days/Times: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 3:00–9:00 p.m. (18 hours per week at the college)

- Location: SPC’s Allstate Center, 3200 34th St. S, St. Petersburg, FL 33711Breaks:

- Winter Break: December 20, 2025 – January 4, 2026

- Spring Break: March 16, 2026 – March 20, 2026

Course Description:

St. Petersburg College’s Electrical Lineworker Training Program is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to pursue entry-level career opportunities in the electric utility industry as lineworker trainees. Students develop technological competency, analytical problem-solving abilities, workplace ethics, teamwork skills, and a strong sense of job responsibility.

The curriculum covers:

- Basic electrical theory and power system operations

- Safe work practices and industry standards

- Overhead and underground electrical construction, operation, and maintenance

- Hands-on skills in pole climbing, hole digging, and tool/machinery use

- Safety practices, first aid, rescue, CPR, and computer applications

Learning Outcomes:

Students who complete the program will be able to:

- Apply jobsite safety rules, emergency procedures, and Right-to-Know Law requirements

- Interpret electrical terms, symbols, and circuits; calculate voltage, current, resistance, and power

- Operate meters, explain transformer theory, and apply electrical principles

- Safely use hand tools, hotline tools, and protective equipment

- Operate industry equipment (pole trailers, reel jacks, cable pullers, hoists, climbing gear, multi-meters, rotation meters, gas detectors, voltage testers, relay testers, trenchers, etc.)

- Perform field tasks such as conductor replacement, splicing, crossarm replacement, cable tracing, and explaining substation equipment functions

Instructor Role:

While much of the curriculum and testing is online, live skills practice is the primary responsibility of the instructor. This includes:

- Supervising safety protocols

- Guiding tool operation and pole setting

- Overseeing climbing and field exercises

The new instructor will work closely with SPC’s team and experienced instructor Jim to ensure clarity in assignments and expectations.


Minimum Qualifications:


- Deep understanding of safety regulations, laws, and best practices applicable to their industry to provide accurate and relevant training.

- Strong teaching and presentation skills to effectively communicate safety procedures and protocols to diverse audiences.

- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to clearly convey safety concepts and procedures, and to create comprehensive safety training materials.

- Strong observational skills to assess the safety practices of an organization and identify areas that require improvement or additional training.

- Interpersonal skills to establish rapport with trainees, encouraging an open dialog about safety concerns and fostering a culture of safety.

- Problem-solving skills to identify potential safety risks or hazards and propose practical solutions.

- Basic computer skills (Microsoft programs, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Teams)

- Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accurate records of training activities, and to ensure compliance with all safety regulations and standards.

- Ability to stay up-to-date with changes in safety regulations and guidelines and adapt training programs accordingly.


Education and Experience:

- A minimum of 5 years of experience in utility line clearance is required.

- Experience in safety management within the construction or utility industry.

- Bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, or other equivalent technical fields. Equivalent experience will be considered.


Pre-Screen:

- Upon offer, employees may be required to subject and pass a pre-employment drug screen, background, and/or MVR check.


License & Certifications:


- A valid driver's license is required.


Traveling requirements:

- Regional travel and some overnight stays are necessary.

- Candidates must be able to travel to various jobsites as needed.


Physical Requirements:

- RARE (less than 10%): Stooping, Kneeling, Squatting, Body Twisting, Crawling, Climbing On/Off a Truck, Climbing Poles, Gripping, Climbing Ladders, and Balancing.

- OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): Standing, Sitting, Sense of Touch, Manual Dexterity, Seeing Distant, Lifting over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., Seeing, Reaching, Range of Motion, Depth Perception, Color Vision, Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling, Climbing Stairs, Lifting up to 10 lbs., Lifting up to 50 lbs.

- FREQUENT (up to 66%): Walking.

- CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): Speaking Clearly, Reading, and Hearing - Speech Range.


Safety:

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.
