Apprentice Lineworker

Columbia Power & Water Systems (CPWS) is a public utility proudly serving the citizens of Columbia and Maury County Tennessee since 1939. CPWS is recruiting an Apprentice Lineworker to join our team. This role offers the opportunity to train and develop the skills necessary to become a proficient Lineworker, responsible for maintaining and constructing overhead and underground power distribution facilities.

This is a safety-sensitive position subject to standby, afterhours, and/or emergency call out. Apprentice Lineworkers must reside within a CPWS service territory or Maury County.

The primary duties & responsibilities of this position include:

- Assist with the construction, installation, and maintenance of overhead and underground primary and secondary facilities, per CPWS specifications and standards

- Climb poles to perform maintenance

- Assist with covering up high voltage

- Assist with performing cut-ins and cut-outs

- Assist with patrolling all power lines

- Assist with trimming trees and cutting rights-of-ways

- Assist in digging dirt or rock holes for poles and/or anchors

- Assist with working on substations and power transmission lines

- Assist in operating aerial devices or digger derrick units in a safe manner and in compliance with the manufacturer’s operation limits

- Assist in maintaining street and security lights

- Assemble materials and assist other employees

- Operate truck, digger derrick, or other equipment as needed

- Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to climb poles up to 100 feet

- Ability to lift 0 – 100 pounds for 2 hours a day

- Ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing 0 – 25 pounds for 6 hours a day

- Ability to stand for 8 hours a day

- Ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch for long periods of time

- Ability to talk, see, hear, reach, handle, and feel

- Ability to easily walk across undeveloped areas that may be hilly, overgrown, and rocky

- Ability to work with and in close proximity to electrical equipment including but not limited to meters, transformers, etc., low and high electrical voltages, electrical and magnetic fields, and potential exposure to electrical shock

- Ability to navigate and operate in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, etc., which may require bending, crawling, and maneuvering in tight areas

- Ability to safely and comfortably work at heights of up to 60 feet

- Ability to work inside and outside and be exposed to noisy places, fumes, chemicals, toxic substances, and machinery

- Ability to be exposed to weather conditions that are cold, hot, rainy, and windy

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

- High School Diploma or equivalent required

- Maintain a valid State of Tennessee Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License; driving record must meet the requirements to be covered by CPWS liability insurance.

- Preference will be given to people who have completed a Lineman Apprentice Program, Climbing Certification, etc.
