Lead Mechanic - Technical Services

Section 1 – Position Summary

This position performs skilled maintenance work in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery such as pumps, valves, air compressors, and rotating assemblies. Will supervise a group of mechanics on special jobs or work orders.

Section 2 – Major Responsibilities

1. Maintain the various water and wastewater treatment, purification and production related equipment and facilitate mechanical repairs necessary to keep equipment operating in an efficient manner.

2. Coordinate with water and wastewater operations personnel to assure critical equipment is operational.

3. May be asked to assist other departments with various task during emergency repairs or routine maintenance.

4. Performs all routine preventative maintenance tasks as specified in the equipment operations and maintenance manuals.

5. Performs routine repair and preventative maintenance tasks on other equipment as directed.

6. Observes safe work practices through proper use of safety equipment and procedures including permit required confined space entry and lock out tag out.

7. Supervise a team of mechanics on special jobs or work orders.

8. Assist subordinate employees with troubleshooting and repairing of mechanical equipment

9. Responsible for evaluating quality of work performed by subordinate employees.

10. Responsible for ensuring subordinate employees receive required trainings

11. Orders supplies and parts as needed.

12. Will be required to be on a rotational “ONCALL” status to respond to NTMWD repairs outside of normal business hours must be able to work overtime when needed

Section 3 – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

1. Must be able to read and understand technical manuals and drawings.

2. Must have the ability to comprehend, carry out and administer written and oral instruction.

3. Must become proficient in the use of the District Computerized Maintenance Management System

4. Must have the ability to read operations and maintenance manuals, schematics, blueprints and safety data sheets.

5. Must possess considerable knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

Section 4 – Education and Experience

1. Five years of experience as mechanic.

2. Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License.

3. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

Section 5 – Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment

This position requires continuous physical exertion often of a strenuous nature. Lifts or pulls/pushes 50 pounds on a daily basis and up to 100 pounds on a weekly basis in order to repair and service pumps, motors and machinery while using various hand tools and equipment. Hand and power tools including drill press and lathe, welding equipment, pickup truck, emergency lighting equipment, safety equipment and crane.
