The Maintenance Garage Mechanic is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment used in shipyard and marine operations. Working under the direction of the Maintenance Garage Supervisor, this position ensures that shipyard equipment, vehicles, and support machinery are maintained in a safe, reliable, and operational condition.
- Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled inspections on shipyard and marine operations equipment
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine systems
- Service mobile equipment, vehicles, and machinery such as forklifts, cranes, loaders, trucks, generators, pumps, and related support equipment
- Follow work assignments and maintenance schedules provided by the Maintenance Garage Supervisor
- Read and interpret technical manuals, service bulletins, and manufacturer specifications
- Inspect equipment for unsafe or defective conditions and report findings promptly
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and inspection documentation
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
- Comply with all company safety policies and procedures, including proper use of PPE
- Coordinate with other departments to support shipyard operations as needed
- Mentor new employees and apprentices
- Manage inventory of tools, equipment, and materials; request supplies as needed
- Enforce housekeeping standards and safe work practices throughout the work area
- Other duties as assigned.
- Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a shipyard, marine, construction, or industrial setting considered an asset.
- Solid understanding of workplace safety practices and hazard identification.
- Willingness and physical ability to perform labour-intensive tasks and work in various weather conditions.
- Availability to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
- Basic computer literacy and familiarity with administrative tasks such as documentation.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet facility access requirements
