Water Technician (Hybrid Meter Reader / Field Technician)
We are seeking a Full-Time Water Technician to join our field staff. We are looking to fill this position with a long-term employee who possesses strong communication skills, drive, and a positive outlook. This is a hybrid position combining meter reading and field technician responsibilities. Daily work may include routine meter reading routes, customer interactions related to meter data, and hands-on field work supporting water system operations, maintenance, inspections, and repairs. The balance between meter reading and field technician duties will vary based on operational needs and scheduling. This is an entry-level position and an opportunity to join the water utility operations field. Learn the trade while in a paid position, working in an essential services field that is minimally affected by fluctuations in the economy. - Perform routine meter reading accurately and efficiently, including documentation and customer-facing interactions as needed
- Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, writing, driving and talking.
- Withstand normal environmental conditions both inside and out throughout the year
- Collect water quality samples using accurate procedures that meet all health agency regulatory requirements, including coordination with a water quality lab for sample containers, collection procedures, and pickup/drop-off schedules
- Accurately operate and use field test kits to measure applicable water quality parameters
- Understand and comply with general safety practices and demonstrate good decision-making regarding personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, safety eyewear, footwear, and gloves
- Ability to lift a minimum of 75 pounds
- Effective communication skills including phone and email
- Ability to work independently and maintain efficient daily, weekly, and monthly schedules
- Coordinate and communicate effectively with NWS staff, water system points of contact, and applicable regulatory agencies to operate and maintain public and/or private water systems
- Physical ability to dig up applicable water system components as needed for inspection or repair
- Physically able to safely handle and transport water treatment system chemicals and supplies
- Ability to work with basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Intuit, and others as used by NWS
- Daily input of required water system data, tasks, water quality information, meter data, and time tracking
- Ability to meet a rotating on-call schedule of 7 days per shift, including outside of normal business hours, with phone, email, and field response duties
- Field work during on-call shifts may include repair of water system components, meter-related issues, or customer communication
- Additional coordination with regulatory agencies as required
- Is disciplined and able to work thoroughly and efficiently on their own
- Does the right thing whether being watched or not
- Is comfortable saying “I don’t know” and asking questions
- Possesses the personal drive to become a professional in their field
- Appreciates working with like-minded people and understands the value of teamwork
- Is comfortable participating in a rotating on-call schedule after business hours
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Water Distribution Manager Level 1 certification after one calendar year of employment
