Job Summary

- This role is the top progression level in the Engineering Technical Specialist series. Distinguished from the Engineering Technical Specialist II by the increased complexity in the application of technical and engineering skills and knowledge.

- Performs difficult and complex work requiring strong technical skills and significant knowledge and experience within the functional area or specific engineering discipline preferably including experience with coal combustion residual projects.

- This role does not function as a technician in modifying, operating or maintaining systems or equipment.

- Provides expert technical support, direction and advice in analyzing and evaluating systems, equipment and programs.

- Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.

- Devises new approaches to problems encountered and develops engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design criteria and standards.

- Implements technology within an engineering field.

- Focuses on the practical application of engineering theories; determines how to make the designs and plans of engineers work.

- Applies scientific and engineering principles and methods, along with technical skills, to support engineering activities.

- May perform product improvement, testing, field engineering, development, manufacturing, construction, systems development, quality control, and operational engineering.

- May perform some design and theoretical work, but does not possess the educational background to function as an engineer.

- May perform same work as titled Engineers, but possesses an engineering degree which is not ABET accredited.

- May provide technical project management including scoping, scheduling, budget development, cost tracking and oversight of complex projects to meet cost and time objectives.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

- 5-6+ years of relevant experience, preferably with coal combustion residual projects, and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline.

- In-depth knowledge of engineering principals, theories and practices.

- Ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.

- Ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.

- Strong oral, written and graphical communication skills including technical writing; ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.

- Ability to conduct standard tests, measurements and experiments.

- Ability to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes.

- Ability to function effectively independently and as a member on a technical team.

- Excellent organization and project management skills.

- Excellent personal computer skills including knowledge of applicable software programs.

Education Requirements

If degree is listed as preferred, then the degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree. If degree is listed as required, then the equivalency is not accepted in lieu of required degree.

Bachelor preferred in Engineering Technology

In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:

Engineering Technical Specialist III:

- 5+ years of directly related experience and a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology (ABET or non ABET accredited) - OR 5+ years of directly related experience and Bachelor’s or post- graduate degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, or Computer Engineering

- Equivalent combination of directly related experience may be accepted in lieu of degree
