The Energy Efficiency Field Engineer will be responsible for conducting research experiments and performing standardized tests and gathering and analyzing data collected on-site from end-use customer facilities and in the testing lab facility in Davis. This position requires effective communication and coordination with internal teams as well as external stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and technical partners. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is essential, especially Excel, as well as Python for data analysis. Candidate must be familiar with measurement and verification protocols and approaches. Familiarity with project management software such as Deltek Vantagepoint is a plus.
The Energy Efficiency Field Engineer is a post entry-level position and is responsible for executing on assigned project tasks. Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Evaluate and analyze the performance of building systems (HVAC, hydronic, and electrical) in residential, commercial and industrial environments
- Conduct accurate on-site & lab based energy analyses to gather the necessary details for developing energy-saving recommendations and supporting rebate or incentive applications for end-use customers
- Complete energy savings calculations and assist with the preparation of rebate or incentive applications
- Conduct outreach to new and existing clients to find project opportunities
- Manage time effectively across fieldwork and lab & office-based tasks to ensure project milestones are met
- Collaborate with clients, contractors, and design professionals to understand building characteristics and identify opportunities for energy optimization
- Translate findings into actionable recommendations through clear, well-organized reports and presentations
- Provide regular project updates and status reports to the program lead
- Maintain thorough documentation and communicate findings in a clear and professional manner
- Support the development of long-term energy strategies tailored to client needs
- Must be able to travel to customer sites & test sites, generally within 150 miles of the Davis office (occasionally farther)
- Perform other activities as requested related to energy conservation, reporting, and project support as needed
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Industrial, Environmental, Architectural, or a related discipline) is required
- A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in engineering, building systems, energy efficiency, or a closely related field aligned with the specified degree disciplines
- Foundational understanding of residential, commercial and industrial building systems, including HVAC, hydronic, and electrical systems
- Foundational understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer and psychrometrics
- Demonstrated experience or strong interest in energy efficiency, building performance analysis, or sustainable design
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with a strong emphasis on Excel for data analysis and reporting
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to draw insights from data and translate them into actionable recommendations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy in data collection and reporting
- Self-motivated and organized, with the ability to manage time effectively across multiple tasks and projects
- A collaborative and personable approach with the ability to work well in both independent and team environments
- Willingness to learn, take initiative, and adapt in a fast-paced and evolving work environment
- Experience with customer service and outreach, with the ability to engage professionally and effectively with clients, contractors, and stakeholders
- Advanced understanding of building systems, energy technologies, and their applications within residential, commercial and industrial settings.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Engineer-in-Training (EIT), LEED accreditation, or other relevant industry credentials.
- Experience with utility incentive programs or energy rebate application processes.
- Familiarity with energy modeling tools, auditing software, or building automation systems.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and system schematics.
- Prior experience supporting or leading energy audits or decarbonization initiatives.
- Working knowledge of applicable energy codes, standards, or sustainability guidelines (e.g., ASHRAE, Title 24, ENERGY STAR).
