The DrillTap Technician supports fabrication operations by accurately drilling and tapping holes in structural steel and miscellaneous steel components according to shop drawings, work orders, and supervisor instructions. This position also includes rigging and forklift operation, layout corrections, and final detail work. Position also works closely with QA/QC to ensure a quality product. Some welding is needed. Open to the possibility of training the right candidate in MIG welding, TIG welding, and spool gun welding. This role is hands-on and production-focused, requiring attention to detail, safe machine operation, and the ability to work efficiently in an industrial shop environment.
- Drill and tap holes in structural steel and fabricated components using drill presses, milling machines, magnetic drills, CNC equipment (if applicable), and hand tools
- Read and interpret basic shop drawings, cut lists, and work orders to determine hole size, location, and thread requirements
- Set up workpieces using clamps, fixtures, jigs, and measuring tools to ensure accuracy and safety
- Select proper drill bits, taps, speeds, feeds, and cutting fluids for various steel grades and thicknesses
- Deburr holes and clean parts to meet quality and fit-up requirements
- Inspect work for accuracy, proper thread engagement, and conformance to specifications
- Perform routine machine checks and basic preventive maintenance
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area
- Follow all shop safety rules, PPE requirements, and company policies
- Communicate issues, defects, or discrepancies to supervisors promptly
- Assist other shop personnel as needed to support production flow
- Basic experience working in a fabrication or industrial shop environment
- Ability to safely operate drill presses, mag drills, and hand tools
- Ability to learn drilling and tapping principles
- Ability to use measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, and squares
- Ability to lift, move, and position steel materials with or without mechanical assistance
- Dependable attendance and strong work ethic

- Previous experience drilling and tapping structural steel
- Familiarity with AISC fabrication standards
- Experience working from shop drawings
- Forklift or overhead crane experience (or willingness to be trained)
