Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary

This is an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining.

The Corrosion Mechanic-NACE Cathodic protection training 1 would install, perform maintenance and operate cathodic protection equipment; anodes, rectifiers and enclosures on gas pipelines to ensure uninterrupted gas service. Collect and utilize corrosion data to troubleshoot and maintain equipment. Journeyman Corrosion Mechanic-NACE CP1 can work alone or with any other Corrosion Department position. The individual must be able to drive safely, work extended hours; and wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment.

This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

This position may be subject to Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) review and approval. Provisional hires will be required to participate in targeted training to achieve journey-level knowledge of the role and responsibilities.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $65.27 per hour. This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

Job Responsibilities


- Obtain pipe/soil saturation reads at meters, frames and covers using equipment; obtain rectifier reads on poles and underground using equipment.

- Use the Vivax device to troubleshoot pipeline protection problems at the rectifier or insulation point and follow the current, walking with a receiver to locate the contact; may clear contact using hand tools.

- Prepare and color – code maps to identify steel main, pipeline and anodes; check pipe/soil saturation and check spans for current flow by attaching the Vivax device to insulation points or rectifiers; check entire area for an initial survey or only key points for a resurvey.

- Drive vehicle to job sites; load and unload tools and equipment; perform vehicle checks; wash vehicle.

- May also be required to mentor Apprentice Corrosion Mechanics and/or assist Senior Corrosion Mechanic NACE-CP2 or Lead Corrosion Mechanic.

- Attend various meetings, including first aid, safety and compliance meetings.

- Conducts A-form inspection.

- Conducts corrosometer probe reading and rectifier-monitoring remote or on-site.

- Performs casing, soil resistance, magnetic particle and isolation testing.

- Performs coupon test station monitoring.

- Performs CPA troubleshooting including the use of ACCA Defect Mapper or wire spanning.

- Performs galvanic anode installation.

- Performs liquid sampling.

- Performs pipe-to-soil readings.

- Takes ultrasonic pipe wall thickness readings and pit depth measurements.

- Performs visual evaluation pipe coating.

- Completes atmospheric corrosion surveys.

- Performs non-USA pipe locate and mark and equipment calibration for equipment used in those tasks.

Qualifications

Minimum:

- Must be at least 18 years of age

- Ability to pass federally mandated random drug and alcohol testing

- Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License by day one of hire

- Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

- Completion of Apprentice Corrosion Mechanic program and/or completion of NACE Cathodic protection training (CP Level 1)

- If hired as Provisional, must pass the provisional training plan within timeline agreed to

- Ability to drive and work safely in all weather and road conditions.

- Ability to work flexible schedules, extended hours, nights, weekends, and/or overtime (scheduled or ad hoc)


Desired:

- Minimum of one year of Utility Construction experience

- Pipeline Cathodic protection system troubleshooting experience

- Work experience and knowledge related corrosion control in a pipeline operating environment

- Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems, corrosion related portions of NEC, and NACE standards

- Experience with PG&E, job related
