Our core business hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday (may vary depending on the role). This position is ideal for someone who is eager to make a meaningful impact, support financial processes, and contribute to efficient and accurate accounting operations.
General Description:
Under the direction of the Vice President, Finance, the Accounting Specialist is responsible for creating journal entries, tracking account contents, and preparing monthly account audits to support internal financial statements. The role also includes financial, clerical, and administrative tasks to ensure efficient, timely, and accurate management of accounts, with a focus on data accuracy and financial analysis. Proficiency in Excel and a solid understanding of accounting principles are required.
Characteristics, Features, Requirements:
This full-time role requires strong administrative skills, attention to detail, and the ability to complete complex calculations. The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be comfortable working across departments. A solid understanding of the full accounting cycle, bookkeeping procedures, GAAP, ASPE, and office administration is essential. The ability to synthesize data from various sources, meet deadlines, and work independently is crucial for success.
Reporting:
The Accounting Specialist reports directly to the Finance Manager or a designated supervisor and works under the guidance of the VP, Finance. Performance goals, objectives, and weekly schedules are reviewed regularly to ensure alignment with company expectations.
Important and Essential Duties:
The primary responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Perform accounting tasks such as creating/posting journal entries, reconciling accounts, and maintaining financial records.
•Assist with month-end and year-end closings, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
•Prepare trial balances, internal financial statements, and reports in line with GAAP.
•Audit financial transactions to resolve discrepancies and ensure compliance.
•Maintain accurate, organized documentation of financial transactions.
•Participate in accounts receivable/payable processes, including collections, invoicing, and coding.
•Analyze and report on financial status, including income and budget variances.
•Assist with the preparation for annual audits and in the development of internal controls.
•Generate reports for management, assist with budgeting and forecasting, and support contract management.
Experience/Knowledge/Ability
•3+ years of full-cycle accounting and bookkeeping experience;
•Strong understanding of GAAP, ASPE, and relevant accounting regulations,
•Experience preparing financial statements and managing reconciliations;
•Proficiency in financial systems (Sage 100, Sage 300) and Excel for data analysis and reporting;
•Strong problem-solving and data management skills;
•Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
•Ability to manage multiple tasks with tight deadlines;
•High level of professionalism, accuracy, and attention to detail.
Qualifications
•Post-secondary diploma in accounting, bookkeeping, or finance, OR
•At least two years in a recognized accounting/financial program (e.g., CPA or CFA), OR
•Relevant coursework combined with several years of accounting experience.
Working Conditions
•Office-based role with computer use; occasional remote work as needed.
•Tight deadlines, especially during month-end and year-end reporting.
•Possible evening/weekend work during peak periods
