Overview:
The Water Measurement Technician I/II will provide technical work related to testing, maintaining, and repairing various types of water meters, backflow prevention devices, and other equipment.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
This person will:
- Provide technical work related to testing, installing, maintain, and repairing various types of water meters, backflow prevention devices, and other related equipment.
- Read and document meter and gauge readings; perform mathematical computations related to water production, usage, flow rates, and operating pressure.
- Operate a variety of water meter installation, maintenance, and testing equipment
- Maintain various paper and computer records and logs related to water meter reading, maintenance, and repair activities.
- Conduct meter reading at various water production wells, surface water turnouts, and treated water turnouts.
- Conduct water meter maintenance (maintenance, repair, overhaul, and testing).
- Prepare and maintain maps, charts, records, and other documents related to water production meters and wells.
- Complete water meter installations.

Ideal Experience:
Water Measurement Technician I:
One (1) year of experience in water meter reading, meter maintenance, electrical, plumbing, water sample collection or water level measurement.
Water Measurement Technician II
Three (3) years of experience in reading and/or maintaining water meters
Ideal Skills and Abilities:
Water Measurement Technician I:
Ability to:
- Learn operational characteristics of valves, pumps, meters, and other mechanical devices.
- Learn methods and techniques involved in installing, using, inspecting, maintaining, testing, and repairing water meters, water level measurement or water sample collection devices, and related equipment.
- Learn to conduct a variety of field studies related to assigned duties.
- Learn to operate a variety of water meter reading and testing equipment.
- Learn pertinent databases.
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Water Measurement Technician II:
In addition to the qualifications for Water Measurement Technician I:
Ability to:
- Learn operational characteristics of valves, pumps, meters, and other mechanical devices.
- Learn methods and techniques involved in installing, using, inspecting, maintaining, testing, and repairing water meters, water level measurement or water sample collection devices, and related equipment.
- Learn to conduct a variety of field studies related to assigned duties.
- Learn to operate a variety of water meter reading and testing equipment.
- Learn pertinent databases.
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Ideal Knowledge:
Water Measurement Technician I:
- Principles and procedures of recordkeeping.
- Best practices for office procedures, methods, and equipment.
- Plumbing techniques.
Water Measurement Technician II:
In addition to the qualifications for Water Measurement Technician I:
- Methods and techniques of compiling and analyzing water use.
- Operational characteristics of water meter reading, installation, and testing equipment and tools.
- Plumbing, pipe fitting, welding, and fabrication methods and techniques.
- Operational characteristics of valves, pumps, meters, and related mechanical devices.
- Methods and techniques involved in installing, using, inspecting, maintaining, testing and repairing water meters, water sample collection and water level measurement devices, backflow prevention devices, and related equipment.
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
- Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester license is desirable.
Required License or Certificate

Wells & Water Measurement Unit (Position Code 582)
Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.
This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.
