About the Department
The Enterprise Web Applications team develops and maintains external-facing web applications that present data from upper systems and support critical services hosted within SMD-SSO—including CAMS, FCTS, and more. Our work spans product issue resolution, feature development, and process automation to improve security, efficiency, and user experience. We leverage modern DevOps and security tools such as Terraform, IAS, ArgoCD for continuous deployment, and HashiCorp Vault for secret management.
About the Internship
We are seeking a motivated Automation & PKI Modernization Intern to join our team. This role offers the opportunity to work on key initiatives supporting both automation and
security improvements, with direct exposure to real-world IT operations. The intern will help accelerate ISO New England’s PKI modernization efforts, strengthen automation, and support enhancements to secure communications across enterprise systems.
What You’ll be Working On
- Automate PKI management using HashiCorp Vault.
- Test external-facing web applications for identity-related flaws.
- Support ongoing SSO integration development.
- Write scripts and contribute to CI/CD pipelines.
- Assist with day-to-day operations, including issue triage, monitoring, and configuration.
How Will You Make an Impact
You’ll strengthen the security and efficiency of enterprise web applications by developing automation solutions and modernizing Public Key Infrastructures, directly supporting the reliability and protection of critical energy systems.
What We Look For in a Candidate
- Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or similar languages.
- Understanding of identity protocols (SAML, OAuth, OIDC).
- Exposure to cloud platforms and modern DevOps tools.
- Familiarity with automation or infrastructure as code (IaC) tools (Terraform, ArgoCD, etc.).
- Comfortable with debugging and troubleshooting in complex systems.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Hands-on experience with PKI automation and certificate management using modern tools.
- Exposure to production support and enhancement activities for enterprise web systems.
- Insight into cybersecurity practices, identity management, and secure communications.
- Collaboration opportunities with teams across cybersecurity, application development, and DevOps.
- Experience enhancing QA processes for external systems through test automation.
- The chance to directly contribute to ISO New England’s automation goals and PKI modernization initiatives.
