IHI Power Services Corp. (IPSC) has a career opportunity for a Structural/ Mechanical Engineer at our Ravenswood Power Plant located in Long Island City, NY. The salary range for this role is $155K - $175K annual base salary. The Structural Mechanical / Mechanical Engineer position will report to Maintenance Manager.
Ravenswood Generating Station is a 2,000 MW electric generating station on 28 acres located in Long Island City, Queens, NY along the East River. It consists of three steam turbine plants (1750 MWs), one GE 7FA combined cycle plant (250 MWs), Ravenswood is a component of the New York City generation supply.
Job Summary
The Structural / Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the safe and quality execution of all structural / mechanical related maintenance activities performed by in-house craft labor or outside contractors.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, structural / mechanical inspections of equipment and facilities to ensure continued safe and functional performance of the facility. Tasks may include detailed engineering evaluation to determine failure potential and mechanisms, structural integrity of all buildings, equipment, to ensure reliable operation. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, all support equipment for gas turbine, steam turbine, generator, boiler, heat recovery steam generator, water treatment, medium and high voltage transformers and switchgear, and all other balance of plant auxiliary mechanical equipment.
Strictly adheres to all safety and environmental rules and regulations to protect employees, contractors, equipment and public safety. Candidate will be expected to work overtime in accordance with department requirements.
Job Functions
- Responsible to ensure that all safety standards are understood and followed as well as overseeing strict adherence to all OSHA regulations as well as company safety policies and procedures;
- Prepare necessary reports and forms. Read and interpret complicated and involved plans, drawings and specifications as required. Work within the guidelines of the company work management system, including planning preventative and corrective maintenance as well as capital project installation and commissioning.
- Familiarization with power plant operation as well as with the use and care of tools, equipment and material. Must be familiar with all civil, structural/mechanical drawings, schematics, PTID’s, etc.
- Utilize the facility’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). Have the ability to work with Supply Chain to order parts and maintain inventory of all needed spares.
- Be able to manage and oversee vendor and contracted work;
- Display a safety-first approach when executing and supervising all work activities.
- Strong knowledge of structural analysis, inspections, investigation and repairs.
- Able to work independently and supervise others.
- Demonstrates the ability to read and interpret structural drawings, mechanical drawings, technical manuals, logic diagrams and P&ID's.
Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Structural, or Civil)
- 5+ years’ experience in the maintenance of power generation equipment, specializing in the maintenance of large generators, transformers, high voltage equipment, control and instrumentation systems, as well as strong knowledge of power plant, combined cycle and gas turbine operations.- Experience with computerized maintenance programs and preventative maintenance practices preferred.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Have or obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card.
- EIT or Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus
- Experience with computerized maintenance programs and preventative maintenance practices preferred.
- Military experience would be considered an asset

- Ability to supervise technical testing/calibration, repair and installation duties in power plant location on all power plant electrical equipment and systems is required.
- Ability to supervise high voltage testing and troubleshooting on circuits, motors, relays and controls utilizing precision instrumentation is required.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
- Requires working both in an office setting and in the field in all weather conditions and common power plant conditions (heat/noise) at all times of day and night.
- Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, respirator, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, high voltage protective equipment and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties.
- Work with hazardous materials may be required.
- May require working extended hours with occasional weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions.
- Includes working indoors and outdoors.
- Working from elevation; occasional heavy lifting and the use of hand and power tools.
- Working with high-pressure steam, water and air; chemicals and chemical equipment.
- Working in cramped and sometimes awkward positions.
