Job Description:

Idaho Power — located in vibrant Twin Falls, Idaho — is looking for a Station Apparatus Inspector to join our Apparatus crew. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a Station Apparatus Inspector do for us?

They work independently without supervision and inspect station facilities to ensure station safety, security, operating, and maintenance performance. They also perform minor maintenance of station equipment and take minor corrective action and/or notifies station technicians or their leader.


Job duties will include:

- Aiding the Station Apparatus Technicians as needed.

- Load and unload nitrogen bottles.

- Performing station battery tests and maintenance.

- Collecting and reviewing maintenance test results and electronically storing them in the appropriate file location.

- Maintaining station buildings and clean and stocks station restrooms. They will also Maintain station grounds and fences to ensure safety, security, aesthetics, and report abnormalities.

- Operating auxiliary equipment such as pumps, exciters, motors, backup generators, relays, and regulators.

- Working with contractors, facilities, and station technicians to complete scheduled work on plumbing, fire extinguisher replacement, HVAC repair, and weed spraying.

Additionally, this individual visits each substation monthly, which requires driving up to 3 hours in duration, and visual inspections that include: checks equipment and inspects transformers, breakers, reactors, capacitors, and performs security inspections that include warning signs, gate signs, and cleanliness.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE


Knowledge of:

- OSHA regulations and MSDS

- Company regulations and policies

- Utility system practices and utility business practices

- Electricity, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, algebra, and trigonometry

- Hand and power tool operation


Preferred:

- Substation construction and maintenance techniques

- Electrical, mechanical, and structural schematics

- Oil processing and SF6 equipment

- Heavy equipment and substation operation

- Power transformers, load tap changes, potential and current transformers

- Power circuit breakers, metal-clad switchgear, circuit switchers, disconnect and air brake switches, synchronous condensers, series and shunt capacitors, and AC & DC controls

- Batteries, protection equipment, mobile transformers, oil vacuum filter equipment, and transformer assembly and disassembly


Skills in:

- Interpersonal communication and good verbal and written communication

- Problem identification, problem solving, troubleshooting and operating test equipment

- Basic use of tablet and personal computers utilizing software applications such as Microsoft Office for word processing, spreadsheets, and e-mail

- Cascade asset and maintenance database, equipment diagnostic testing software, and time management system


Ability to:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


Education:


- High school diploma or GED


Preferred:

- Completion of vocational/technical training, military training, or an associate’s degree in any of the following: electronics, electrical mechanics, instrumentation, machinist/mechanics, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, or refrigeration/air conditioning


Experience:

- 2 years utility experience including experience working in substations, with substations apparatus/materials, or around mechanized or energized equipment


Preferred:

- Experience with electric circuits, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems


Licenses & Certifications:

- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

- A Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card required at time of hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires physical ability to perform work in the field up to 90% of the time in adverse weather conditions (extreme heat or cold), on uneven terrain, and/or within proximity of energized equipment; drive in all weather conditions; work in and around substations and occasionally work in confined spaces; operate test equipment and power tools; climb ladders and structures; Occasionally lift overhead, lift and carry test equipment chest high, waist high or knee high weighing up to 75 pounds; operate foot controls; carrying up to 75 pounds with one or two hands; frequently grasp items such as small hand or power tools; occasional typing. Job requires the ability to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb into and out of vehicles, ascend/descend ladders, twist, kneel, balance and reach. Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property. Medical exam for DOT medical card required for position inspecting Oregon substations. Questions regarding job requirements or accommodation requests should be directed to Human Resources.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Complete DOT PHMSA 49 CFR Part 172 required hazardous materials employee training. Attend defined stations and safety training.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Station Apparatus Inspectors are primarily self-directed positions that are embedded in Idaho Power regional areas. Inspectors may occasionally be called out to respond to emergencies and often travel inside and outside Idaho Power’s service area, including interstate at times. Inspectors work in various conditions and inclement weather.
