Coterra is Hiring a Staff Tax Accountant in Houston, Texas
As a Staff Tax Accountant for Coterra Energy, you will support federal and state tax compliance, reporting, and research activities within a collaborative corporate tax function. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys working independently while partnering closely with experienced tax leaders and teammates. You will gain exposure to complex tax matters in a growing energy organization and have opportunities for mentorship and professional development. You will report directly to the Tax Manager and have no direct reports. This position is located onsite at our Houston, Texas headquarters.
- Support the preparation of tax provision schedules, calculations, and related journal entries
- Assist with preparation of federal income tax returns, estimated payments, and supporting schedules
- Prepare state income and franchise tax returns, annual reports, and required filings
- Respond to federal and state tax authority notices and support audit requests
- Maintain tax calendars for compliance deadlines and miscellaneous filings
- Research tax laws, regulations, and guidance to support compliance and planning activities
- Coordinate administration of offsite tax records storage
- Collaborate with internal accounting teams and support senior tax professionals on special projects
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting with a concentration in Taxation (required)
- Minimum of 2 years of tax experience
- Oil & gas tax experience preferred, but not required
- Experience with P2/Oracle, GoSystems/OneSource, and Sage Fixed Assets DD&A preferred
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
- High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational, research, written, and verbal communication abilities
- CPA license preferred, but not required
This role is primarily office-based and requires extended periods of sitting, standing, and computer use. Occasional visits to operational worksites may be required, at which time appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn. Employees may be asked to work extended hours during peak deadlines. All OSHA, DOT, environmental, and safety standards are strictly enforced.
