Key Accountabilities
Reporting to the Manager, Major Projects, the Senior Project Engineer will focus on supporting development through execution of power generation (gas, wind, solar, battery) projects in Alberta and extending into North America, with strong focus on the execution of the project design and construction. The Project Engineer will also drive continuous improvement through collaboration with other departments and management. Other responsibilities include project compliance and regulatory processes and requirements, project management support during development, review of engineering drawings, studies and specifications, and project site visits. This role will interact with internal and external parties at all levels, and is expected to consistently apply exceptional interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills. Having a customer service approach and setting priorities and allocating necessary resources on a day-to-day and long-term basis are essential functions to satisfying the primary requirements of this position.
Travel to field locations will be required.
Responsibility Area #1 – Project Development
- Work with internal and external customers, OEMs and consultants, to identify potential solutions (power, steam, battery storage, etc.), and help complete early feasibility and concept select studies, including technology, configuration, capacity, efficiency and emissions assessment, electrical/gas interconnections, capex and schedule, regulatory and risk screening, all as required to assist commercial teams in the optimization of project economics and the development of the business case.
- Manage and coordinate OEMs and contractors to ensure aligned deliverables.
- Propose mitigation strategies to overcome challenges in project development.
- Complete early-stage technical design.
- Support development team with early-stage estimates, schedules and project management
- Coordinate between project team, operations and development to ensure alignment of project goals.
- Overall support of the execution of design and construction phases of power generation projects.
- Complete reviews of designs, specifications, construction plans, and commissioning documentation.
- Support project managers with technical tasks, scheduling reviews, consultant and contractor work reviews.
- Assist in any planning, estimating, and scheduling of related project deliverables as required.
- Manage appropriate technical scope of work and complete such scope using internal company resources and supervising external consultants.
- Provide recommendations for equipment selection, new concepts, and techniques to improve performance, cost reductions, project design features, and compliance to changes in code or regulations and provide conceptual design and cost information as well as performance for each configuration.
- Consult with internal teams and external parties, including engineering and construction consultants.
- Coordinate with development and operations teams to ensure compliance obligations are met through all stages of the project.
- Support corporate development with any technical reviews or assessments on potential acquisitions.
- Coordinate and lead external party independent engineering reviews of acquisitions as required.
- Review of technical reports, data and models.
- Risk assessments.
Responsibility Area #4 – Health & Safety
- Promote and support a strong safety culture by integrating health and safety considerations into all activities.
- Collaborate with Health & Safety teams to ensure project related activities comply with safety regulations and standards.
- Participate in hazard identification, risk assessments, and incident investigations related to physical assets if/when required.
- Degree in Mechanical, Civil or Electrical Engineering combined with project engineering experience.
- Experience in medium to large scale (>20 MW) gas fired generation (simple cycle, combined cycle, cogeneration) development, as well as renewable generation development, including design, planning, and construction which includes extensive knowledge and understanding of a variety of construction contracting strategies and when/how each should be implemented to provide the optimal project result.
- Proficient knowledge and experience with the regulatory requirements for power generation project development.
- Minimum 10 years of experience working on power generation projects in Alberta.
- Project engineering and management experience preparing scopes of work, execution plans, cost estimates, schedules, and managing budgets.
- Experience with GT Pro/GT Master software.
- Experience with PVSyst software.
- Experience in power generation project development and approvals (planning, engagement, permitting, environment, historical resources, etc.) and strong understanding of the regulatory requirement for greenfield and brownfield development (i.e., Alberta Utilities Commission, Alberta Environment and Parks, etc.).
- Must be a strong team player, with a proven ability to work independently and capable of working collaboratively with peers and leadership.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to manage critical deadlines and conflicting priorities.
- Knowledge assessing project constructability and constraints analysis.
